My father was telling me he heard on the radio that there's a bounty out for grey squirrels. Is that the case? If it is I'll be bringing my .22 Webley and Scott Patriot out tomorrow in spring for a bit of fun!

I can't seem to find any information about it online, so if you know where info. would be posted could you let me know?

    Thanks.

I think there was a thread on it here.
AFAIK it only applys to gun clubs. The one with the most greys wins. Im not sure as it was a long time ago i read it so dont quote me on that.
    What was the prize again??

I shoot them with a .22lr rifle, which is very humane.

All the lads I know trapping them do this also.

so you put traps out come back the next day and then shoot them in the cage?

hmm, there are not many foods I would not eat :D - but a grey squirrel look bit too much like a big fat rat

    Simply put ..................... yes.

I usually shoot them in the head ;)

Tried to blindfold them and tie them to a post and have a firing squad type execution but found it easier to do it while they're still in the cage :P

Then I use the fur for tying fishing flies and I or my Irish Setter, who incidently is used for shooting, enjoy the lovely meat.

I had two "mounted" by a taxidermist also. One is in my hall and I sold one to a friend.

At the moment there must be 5-6 in my deep freeze too.

So not much goes to waste.

well i thought yous hunted them like you do rabbits, but i guess they ask gun clubs to do the catch and cull it cos 1 shot with a led bullet is less messy then using poison :/

I do often stalk them with the shotgun also but you don't get as many this way.

I think they are lovely creatures and are fascinating to watch, which I often do. Unfortunately, they are killing young trees and endangering the survival of the native red and the greys' numbers do need to be controlled. Don't think they are ever going to be wiped out though

I never use poison for anything.

I was looking at a TV show about a man who was employed to kill the Grays. 23,000 he had killed in his area before the money ran out to pay his wages,.

Could you dispatch them the same way you would with a hen that is destined for the pot?

Grey Squirrels also prey on nests and are a threat to songbirds.

    • If your using live catch traps, set them on the ground around the area that you`ve seen squirrels! If your using bodygripers, set them on the trunk of the tree surrounded by a cubby!! Best trap to use for squirrel is the kania 2000, designed to catch squirrel! Best bait has to be peanut butter! No need to cover any of the traps with foliage, there pritty easy catch!!!

They seem to love peanut butter and traps are placed at the bottom of trees and not I do not cover them.

    whats a cubby
t 006.JPG Cubbys just a mesh or timber tunnell used to cover bodygrip or fenn traps!! Stops non target species from getting caught! Not 100% sure but i think they have to be used by law if your not setting them in natural or man made borrows!!!

I'd imagine a rat trap would do the job nicely? Or is there a risk of getting birds?

i had 3 kania 2000 squirrel trap in the garage for the last few years and never got round to putting them up . i always used the air rifle as they were always around the pheasant feeders early in the morning. shot 14 from the one pheasant feeder bot there was three that were a bit wiley and i could never get near them.. i put up the trap, baited with peanut butter and peanuts and had 2 the next morning and got the other one the next morning. Long live kania.......... wouldent like to be using them in a area with red squirrels though.. photo included
