    Hi Folks,

Having finally cut the apron strings and settled in Dublin soutside I was wondering if people could give me some helpful advice.

Having been a member of my local club since a junior and with membership fees due shortly I was just looking at my Golf options for the coming year.

Ideally I would prefer to join a local dublin club (Rathfarnham/Balinteer) so I was wondering if people could tell me what are the viable options available?

I cant really afford a huge joining fee so annual subs only would be preferable. Are all the local clubs like Rathfarnham, the Grange, stackstown etc all closed shops?

    Any help greatly appreciated

    Kev

    Kev,

There is a thread on Dublin memberships which will give you a lot of info.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055654039

Yes the clubs mentioned are pretty much closed shop. You could look at leasing in Powerscourt, Glen of the Downs, Southcounty.

Alternatively there is Grange Castle, Dublin Mountain, Dublin City, Ballinascorney where ther is no entrance fee afaik.

Check out the Membership search engine on the GUI website:

    http://www.gui.ie/membership_search.asp?area=1

    should provide all you seek.

    Thanks lads,

I will check out some of the clubs mentioned...

I am an avid reader of the forum and have checked out the dublin membership thread but it dosent give you much feeling for the club set-up etc hence the new thread...

Just one simple question I have also checked out the GUI site and I find alot of the clubs mentioned esp in dublin were not listed on the membership search. Is this beacuse membership is closed? Also is it just me but is alot of the data on the membership search out of date for 2010.

    thanks
    kev

No, not always the case. I've come to the conclusion that some clubs are just plain lazy and dont update there profiles on the GUI site. Turvey for example theres nothing down, a club I would imagine that wants to attract new members. Best thing is to pick up the phone and call those clubs you listed, the worst they can say is its not open for membership.

"I cant really afford a huge joining fee so annual subs only would be preferable. Are all the local clubs like Rathfarnham, the Grange, stackstown etc all closed shops? "

You're in the same position as myself, I too am looking for something more local. Stackstown is open for membership and you don't have to be a guard. The have reduced their entrance fee in past 2 years however I am not aware of any payment options, but that doesn't mean there aren't any just I don't like the course myself but my other half joined there 2 years ago and loves it. Edna in the office would be more than helpful if you phoned her.

I know the Grange phoned someone last year who had enquired 10 years ago and took in quite a number of members in 2009. Therefore not sure what situation is this year.

Rathfarnham have not reduced their entrance fee but, I believe, are offering to allow new members pay it over 5 years. Again I am unsure of how many they will be taking this year. I do know that they welcome all enquiries though so wouldn't consider them a closed shop. No clubs will really know of their vacancy until past the subs due date.

Edmondstown - don't know a lot about this club perhaps someone else could post some information.

Hope this helps let me know if you hear of anything more local.

As far as I know, Edmondstown haven't reduced their fees. That info is a few months old so I may stand corrected.

Don't know too much about Castle, Grange etc, but slightly further out South County do annual membership (its pretty expensive though I think) and Slade Valley have effectively abolished their joining fee - you need a member to propose you and thats about it.

Not sure if this course is too far out of the South Dublin area that you wanted but I see a years lease membership at Killeen went for €900 on adverts. Would that be of interest?

Loads of these lease memberships in Killeen seem to be knocking around. Anyone a member there who could explain why?

I have leased a membership in Killeen for the last few years and I also knwo someone looking to lease one out if someone is interested (PM)

basically people bought shares in Killeen at the time, some people just as an investment (bad idea as it turned out) or since buying it have moved areas/jobs etc (or these days perhaps just cannot afford the sub but cannot sell their share) and cannot make use of the membership enough so seek to lease it out.

The leasee pays the annual sub for the year and gets all the member entitlements for the year. I think the amoun tis around €1300 this year but as per the ad above, many shareholders realise its a buyers market and will negotiate. €100 comes back to you as bar/food credit

    The course is very good

South County do a yearly lease deal. It's €1900 a year, can be paid in instalments, includes €300 in the bar and a free lesson. Good course too, and there are a few members from the club on Boards too.

For that money I hope its a top class course. Cant say I know too much about it.

    Supply and demand.

If they do not need members then why lower the price to get people in.

Not every club is on the look out of members.

What about Moate, 40 minutes on motorway, good deals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,956 ✭✭✭Russman

    @jimjo - definitely not a top class course :)
They redesigned a few years ago when they lost land because of the M50 and the front nine is still very good but, in my humble opinion, the back is pretty weak. The old layout was much better. No offence intended to any members, any course would be compromised with a motorway going through it.

Either way, not worth €22k in this day and age.

Anyone heard anything about Newlands and membership this year??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 290 ✭✭carnsoreboxer

Newlands - speaking of the ladies section I've been led to believe they would welcome new members and entrance fee has been halved.

Halved as in the same as last year - €7500 over three years or reduced again??

No halved from original €15k wouldn't surprise me to hear they've reduced it again. Sorry I wasn't clearer didn't mean to mislead anyone. Not sure bout payment options.

Thats what I assumed you meant!

Any thoughts on the club itself?

Hmm - played there lots, don't like the noise from all the traffic though they say you get used to it. Haven't enquired there re membership which I think answers your question!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 290 ✭✭carnsoreboxer

Not too sure how accurate this is but just heard that it's written into Constitution that new members to Rathfarnham are accepted as 5 day first. Am trying to get clarification on this will post anything I hear.

got my renewal form in the post for Grange Castle.

They are offering two different methods this year:

    €400 + €22(on weekends)/€16 (midweek i think)

    or

    €1100 single payment

Not sure if they are taking on new members though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 322 ✭✭kevgaa

    Thanks for the replies folks,,,

Spacecoyote, I was thinking about grange castle and at 1100 all it its probably the best option..

What the process for joining? DO you need a member to propose you etc??

    Thanks

As far as I know they are accepting applications at the moment. You dont need a member to propose you. If you give the club a shout they will look after you.
