I plan on heading out to Canada in a year and a half on the under 35's visa.

What industries are strong out there at the moment, for example I've heard that Vancouver doesnt have much in the line of Manufacturing/ Mechanical design Engineering positions.

I've read that the whole Biomedical Engineering Industry isn't strong over there.

I see that anything to do with Mining/ Piping engineering seems to be booming.

I'm sure there are a few boards members over there working in Engineering or you have friends over there.

Where are they working, what industry?

A guy I was in college with went to Canada, he worked in a design office tooling the automotive and mechanical industries, mining is huge over there, try the mine maintenance companies they are constantly looking for mechanical engineers, best of luck to you

Might be worth checking out wage levels there before deciding to go. I know in my side of the industry Canadian wage levels are low due to the high volume of local engineers.

Does anyone know if Canada is investing heavily in green energy sector? If so, are the jobs out there?

There is some investment in Green energy AFAIK on both the east coast and west coast, and lot's of wind in the middle, Ontario has a lot of wind. Micro-Hydro is also pretty big in BC. Alberta has the biggest oil reserves in the world at the moment with the oil sands. But Canada is a massive country, from Toronto to Vancouver is the same distance as going from Paris to Baghdad to put it in our terms!!

Does anyone know the procedure with working as an Engineer out there though, I believe you have to be licensed provincially?

I've done my research on Canada, as I'm heading there this summer.

There are a lot of industries over there, that require engineers. There is Bombardier, aircraft and vehicle manufacturer. There is also Tetra Pak, major packaging manufacturer. However, the competition is tough over there, as very high standard is required.

Being certified as an engineer is also important, so look at whether your professional certification is recognised abroad.
