I am heading to Japan during golden week, has anyone travelled here during this period...... is it as crazy as it's made out to be in regards to trying to find accommodation, transportation etc??

I'm not trying to be smart but it really depends on where you're travelling and where you want to stay. Some smaller, popular places would be booked out already.

Sorry yeah I was a bit vague on the details.
I have a choice of being in hiroshima or Kyoto during golden week, I was thinking of heading to one of the smaller cities or towns around the kansai region during this time but I have been told a lot of people get out of the cities for the same reasons so i'm stuck in a bit of a conundrum

Just trying to find out if anyone had a similar experience and where or what to avoid, or anything they might recommended.

I caught the tail end of it one yera and it's fairly hectic. The smaller places can be completely booked out. Kyoto is always busy but has plenty of hotel rooms (as has Hiroshima) so might be a better option. Kyoto has more than enough to keep you occupied for a week if you've a cultural bone in your body!

The best way to get a feel for it is to research hotels on any of the big hotel booking websites and you'll see the level of demand.

If you're going to be travelling during that week demand is high for trains. I had a Japan Rail Pass but a Japanese friend had (wisely) advised me to get a Green Pass (First Class Travel). This meant that I could usually get a seat even at peak times when standard carriages were full.

    Enjoy!
