    Hey

I was made redundant in Jan 2009 and it wasnt until Nov 2009 that I eventually found work again.

During this time I signed on the dole for the first time (and hopefully last)

I am just wondering, since I worked and paid tax for such a short period of time in 2009 - maybe 2 months max, would I be eligible for any tax relief?

A friend of mine who started work in June but was redundant in January with me said he didnt pay any tax for a few months last year.. I have been paying tax since starting my new job even though I was out of work for longer than him

    Anyone any ideas?

When you get your P60 for 2009 you should request a P21 balancing statement from the Revenue. You can request it online. This will determine whether you have under or overpaid tax and might result in a refund if your tax credits weren't applied correctly. Be warned though - there can be a substantial delay in processing.

Have you notified Revenue of your new employer? You shouldn't be paying much tax at all for Nov/Dec (9 months of tax credit applied to 2 months work!), but as the last poster said, now the year is over the P21 is the tool to get you any money back.

Watch your first pay in January with interest ... it may be less than you were getting last year if the employer has already sorted the tax.
