    http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Haiti_earthquake#Response_by_foreign_states

Basically i was reading about the Haiti Earthquake on Wikipedia and saw that Ireland was sending relief of €20 million. So out of interest i checked the other countries. I couldn't believe to see that no other country on the list (Where it stated a figure) came even close to the ammount we are sending, including the EU and Eoropean Powerhouses such as Germany.

I'm not sure if we are sending too much or everyone else too little but it seems ubsurd to send so much money when in the middle of a Recession compared to other countries in a similar or indeed better position than us.

    Just to say:

    1. I understand that Wikipedia may not be the most accurate of sources
    2. The earthquake in Haiti is a terrible tragedy and we should try and do everything we can do to help but can we afford 20 million if other countries seemingly can't?
    3. I know that other countries are sending food and other things other than money.

Well seeing as it just happened donations may not have been sorted by other countries just yet,it will in time and then wiki will update it,don't worry, there are big players than Ireland when it comes to donations,it looks good

It did not exactly say that they provided €20 million to the Haiti disaster. It said Ireland paid €20 million already into the UN Emergency fund (the Central Emergency Response Fund: http://ochaonline.un.org/Default.aspx?alias=ochaonline.un.org/cerf). That fund is being paid into world-wide every year. Whilst the other countries listed in the RTÉ report actually provide money directly to Haiti apart from their payment into the UN fund there is nothing there saying what Ireland directly contributes.

Here is the list of donors to the CERF fund and their annual payments. As you can see, for example, the UK top all other countries in paying into the fund:

Isn't there some minister going over there to "have a look" aswel? PR at the taxpayer's expense too I'll bet.
It's obvious what the Haitians need; food, water, blankets, medicine, skittles for the kids. My heart goes out to them.
So what is the Minister bringing? A camera crew, a gin & tonic and a magazine for the plane.

Yeah seems like it's true. They need it more than we do. China and the rest should be ashamed of themselves.

Is there any amount of money that could improve Haiti's lot? Apart from the socio-economic factors, the earthquakes, hurricanes and tidal waves make it a write-off of a country.

Indo says 2m, then 4m, then 3.5 million. Over various pages. At least wiki is consistent.

So 100,000 people have died and all ye are talking about is how much money the country is sending?

I know these are hard times but this money will help save lifes... It could be Ireland with an earthquake.

It shouldn't be money that decides how many people are saved, it's a sad reflection of the world's priority.

Earthquakes are terrible, so many people dying is tragic, really.

But, I don't know how much more tragedy Ireland can actually deal with.. aswell as it's own floods, ice, broken economy, ailing health system, and corruption & greed all the way to the top, you can't even eat your dinner without looking at famine on tv, or having yet another civil liberty pushed down to the bottom of the box.

Banks run the world, and it's the poor who pay.

Haiti just had the shit kicked out of it by a powerful earthquake, we're in a recession we caused by most of us being fucking stupid with money.

So, yeah, even if it were 20Million it's still not absurd, cruel acts of god come well above self inflicted wounds in the general scheme of things.
