Have factory unlocked iphone 3gs. What is best way of using it abroad for data and calls. Anyone any experience buying sim cards abroad? France,UK and Portugal in particular. Dont want to pay exorbitant data roaming charges with my own carrier.

ya sure if its factory unlocked youve nothing to worry bout, just buy a local prepaid sim, some countries require id etc when buying prepaid, unlike here where drug dealers and peados are free to buy as many as they like ! :D

I've done that for the last few years when going on holidays, I get a local pre-paid sim and stick it in a spare phone so I can access emails etc.

Here's a good web forum that gives prices/availability for lots of countries:

    http://www.prepaidgsm.net/forum/gsm-3g-prepaid-worldwide/

(If you've a 3 SIM then it works in some countries - 3 like home)

Or a Vodafone pre-paid lets you use live.vodafone apn in most vodafone owned networks for the 99c a day rate.
