    Hi,

What do people think of freelanders in general? 01' shape to be precise?
I am looking for a 4WD and always liked the Freelanders. Some people are telling me the diesals are fine but no sense in a petrol version. CRV is the sister car right?

    Regards

There is no link between a Land rover Freelander & a Honda crv. They are two entirely separate vehicles. They only share the same classification in being soft-roaders.
A honda crv is bulletproof but barely considered a 4x4 & would struggle in anything more than a wet field.
The freelander in all fairness seems to have some sort of off-road ability but has problematic 1.8 petrol engines & some reports mention electrical faults.

Stay away from the K-series petrol engines.
The TD4 BMW sourced diesel engines are solid.

    Just go for the diesel.

Alternatives; Toyota Rav4, Nissan x-trail, suzuki vitara, Mitsubishi pajero pinin.

If you do go for a Freelander, check the tyres. They should match and have no strange wear patterns. If it has say 2 new tyres or the fronts strangely worn it may be that the viscous coupling in the rear drive is siezed or if that's ignored, the IRD unit will pack up leaving it with 2wd, an expensive fix. In a test drive, drive slowly on full lock and listen for tyre scrub or feel for heavy steering which will show up the problem. Later ones aren't as prone to this as they changed the ratios but it's not unknown for owners to remove the rear prop, a poster on another thread was told by a rip off dealer that the prop was removed as an economy measure:eek:.

As Fonecrusher says, go for the TD4, they are good capable vehicle that was one of europes biggest selling 4x4s, the current Freelander 2 is even better.
