    Met an oddball burglar yesterday.

Heard a knock on my bedroom door yesterday, opened it to see some dubious lookng character standing in the hall who seemed surprised I was in. He asked me was Mikel living there (the name of a friend of mine who lives up the road), I said nah, "he's living "a few doors up." Chatted to the guy for a bit; nice man although with bad English.

Went back to work and was caught up studying secular law's interaction with religious groups, heard doors being opened downstairs, I figured it was my flatmates coming back to the house so ignored it. Later went to meet my friend in town and saw the dubious fellow with an even more dubious looking fellow heading towards the train station carrying a plastic bag.

Was still grinding away at the books this morning when the landlord (lives on the ground floor) comes in. Asks did I see anything strange last night. He takes me downstairs to show me that the two bedroom doors on the 1st floor had their door handles and keyholes physically removed and nicked. He spoke to the other flatmates; nothing had been stolen. Police came round and decided not to bother going ahead with investigating (as I was the closest thing to a witness with no Dutch, the paperwork would be a nightmare; language requirements)

Essentially some guy had broken into our house, had a nice conversation with me and then stolen the door handles and keyholes, leaving behind laptops, money, phones etc.

Anyone got any bizarre crime stories?

Couple of years ago, our family home was broken into... it appered to have taken said criminal some time to break in.. and he also spent some time trashing the place... needless to say had the gaurds out etc, fingerprinting etc..

So they ask what appers to be missing..
Me.. just my penny jar, estimated value 30euro

He needed a sack of doorknobs for granny bashing etc. It's fairly common in Belgium I hear.

Nah, given that it's Belgium he probably needed the locks and handles to keep kids locked away in his basement.

I'm sure if you look close enough you will see the keyholes are still there.

I don't think it counts as stealing if you decide to hand them over your money.

The correct word for it is extortion. :D
