The programme you're watching goes to an ad break, and when you go channel hopping to fill the 5 minutes, every other channel is on a break too? Seriosly annoying. Sometimes i think they do it on purpose!

By it you mean scheduling programmes to start every half hour on the half hour with one ad break roughly halfway inbetween?

I think they do this so people don't need to look up a tv guide to know when the next programme is starting.

Should there not be a  after that? Or do you just think its a coincident?

It is deliberate. It's to discourage people from changing the channel. Why bother changing if there are just more ads? Remember, once you are watching their channel, they don't want you to leave!

That wrecks my head, I only noticed it when I got the English channels. They are so particular about when their breaks are!

What really fúcks me up is the pattern of going to an ad break around 5 minutes after the program starts. Channels like Bravo, Sky1, Dave and the like are basterds for this.
Satellite TV is generally a pain in the ass. If you flip through the channels at any time, its like 80% of them are on ad breaks.

Whats worse is Slumdog Millonaire starts now on Channel 4 and at 9:30 Ocean Eleven is on ITV2 but also to make matter worse Top Gear is on at 10pm on BBC 2:confused:

This is where they try to trick you into paying for Sky+

Have Sky+? Show starting at 8? Start recording it at 8, and start watching it at 8:15.
    Fast forward through the ads.
    Problem solved.

Yeah mostly I record shows and watch them all in a row later on. Pain in the arse when you are watching something ten mins behind and your friend texts you the ending 'omg can you believe that x died or y got voted off!!!'

I think it is on purpose. If you flick between channels from the same company it seems fairly obvious that it is purposely done. Dave, Gold, Alibi etc.

The MTV family of channels are tiresome in that the block of adverts are almost identical.

easy enough to do that with a dvd recorder with a hard disk, its a one off payment and no need for sky +

sky+ is a one off payment now too, and it's a piece of p*ss to use. I've been down the hard disk recorder route - just not worth the hassle.

sky+ used to cost more each month - I delayed getting it until it was a one-off fee for the upgraded box/dish.

    (i don't work for sky!)

Can you save your programmes on to another disk if you want to watch them on another PC?

Interesting, I was thinking of looking into getting sky soon but I do like to be able to record something off the tv and throw it onto dvd to watch on my laptop, like Elmo said is it possible to do that with sky plus?

If you have a DVD recorder I am sure that is possible now that I think of it but I was thinking more in the line of other HDDs.

The ad breaks are well synchronised all right, do you also notice how the T.V. volume also rises once the ads kick in. The only channels you'll find that aren't on ads when your looking for filler are channels like the - Grass Growing Channel or the Paint Drying Channel, etc, etc.

Sky charge us subscriptions then subject us to bloody ads.
Its a disgrace ,shouldnt be tolerated at all,the amount of income that Sky make from ads as a percentage on subs is tiny.

As Sky own & operate a small minority of the channels on their service, how do you suggest that the others (who, afaik, are charged by Sky etc to be carried on their platforms) make money to operate. They could swindle people with text-ins but that's probably for a different thread;)

But, yeah, the smaller satellite channels are pretty annoying for that, could be worse though...could be american style TV!

Agree totally. I notice it all the time but i suppose its normal like at 15 minutes past the hour alot of programmes go on break. Drives me crazy also.

This is against some EU law.

Anyone doing that to me gets an immediate home visitation and a dig in the head. That said I usually watch everything important online so don't suffer from too many spoilers.

What gets me wondering is whether it is beneficial to put your ad break on at a slightly different time to most other channels. I suppose it depends on the quality of the programme.
For example, if you had a very gripping exciting show on TV3, then you'd be quite happy in thinking that you weren't going to lose people if your ad break was 8 minutes into the programme - even though people flick through the other stations and find shows still running, they will return to your stellar show.
And then, when the other, inferior shows take their ad breaks, yours is already over, and the viewers of the crappy shows will see your show on their ad break flickering and be instantly converted - thus, higher ratings!
I don't know if the tv people think about these things all that much, but I certainly do.

Firstly "if you had a very gripping exciting show on TV3" highly unlikely.

I am sure other companies do think about it but companies that own other channels tend to put advertising on at the same time. For example across the UK TV set of channels you will notice ads at the same time (Dave, Gold, Home etc) or Channel 4 set of channels and even RTÉ 1, 2 and for TV3 both TV3 and 3E. This means that those companies aren't loosing advertising revenue to flickers.
