How much of Pro-wrestling should be focused on storylines?

Just thinking back to some of the days of the 90's especially when events were built up with soap opera-like storylines in the background and there'd be little fillers such as Right To Censor accusing Undertaker of vandalism and theft. Recently the most they've been able to muster up is the Edge/Vicky saga. Personally I think the attitude era had it spot on and I suppose this whole guest host thing on Raw eliminates struggles between GP's and superstars.

The debate I want to spark is, is there room for more room for advanced storylines separate from the actual matches? Or do you prefer the limited storylines model that focuses on just booking matches like boxing or mma?

I miss long-term booking, when a feud would run for over a year and slowly unfold before your eyes as time passed by. The nail in its coffin was the monthly PPV's when storylines started getting hot-shotted and rushed as there was only 3/4 weeks to build before the big pay off.

My favourite segments used to revolve around the 24/7 rule of the Hardcore title, miss that more than anything. The CCTV thing that used to randomly appear on the titantron revealing scandals was a classic too

Storylines in pro wrestling are essential to keep peoples attention. How much focus should there be, well that raises the question of wrestlings chicken and egg ie

Should storylines be used to get the match over or the match to get the storyline over?

I think as far as Pro Wrestling goes they are both crucial and one should not exist without the other (with the exception of opening matches perhaps)
