Causes of emissions light on Golf?

The emissions light (small pic of an engine) intermittently comes on in my wife '05 1.4 Golf.
We had similar problems last year that resulted in the complete replacement of the engine management unit, but the dealer was clear they could not investigate any issues unless the light is on.. Its difficult to get it booked in 2 weeks in advance, when the light only comes on now and then...

Any ideas what could cause this? Is there anything a non-mechanic (me :)) could check?

try and get someone with a vag com diagnostic cable theres no way the ecu should of been replaced unless there was real good reason for it.And as for not been able to diagnose the problem unless the light is on thats also false once the light comes on the ecu records the error wheather it stays on or not unless the ecu is reset.Light could be a number of things most likely a lambda sensor.Could also be something as simple as a missfire. How is the car running?

thanks for the response.. in fairness, when the ECU was replaced every light on the dashboard was continually lit (although it started off with just single intermittant ones).
The engine is running fine, no misfires or obvious problems.. Was assuming it was just going to be a sensor problem, but don't fancy paying a few hundred quid just to have a dealer confirm that..
The ECU has about 1 month left on a one year warranty, and I really dont want to have to spend another 1500 Euro on replacing that...

well it could be the car is just after picking up a problem anyway even with the new ecu.My advice would be to find someone you know with a diagnostic for vws you could even buy one yourself off ebay for 20 quid and plug it in just to see what code comes up then you will know where to go from there.I really dont think main dealers are your best bet because they charge too much and arnt any differant from any other backstreet mechanic. Most likely a sensor and they can be expensive.

Will do.. thanks for the advice.. appreciate it :)

Actually final questions.. I assume there is nothing too dangerous about an emissions fault? Wife and 2 babies in the car.. so would rather be safe than sorry..

well if the car is driving normally it should be ok.Normally it is only the lambda prope wont make any differance to the car except fuel consumption and emissions so if it is it will have to be done for nct.But if the car starts developing any missfires or engine stalling etc. be sure to park it up straight away
