Degradation of antifreeze?

Mechanic reckons the Missus's 99 Polo's Timing Belt snapped and totalled the engine cause the coolant in the water pump had frozen......

    - Funny thing is that the water in the reservoir was a fine reddish colour, so conclusion is that either the antifreeze degraded over time or else somebody tipped in a bottle of red food colouring in place of actual antifreeze!

Anyway I read on a couple of bottles of antifreeze in the Motor Factors that the coolant should be replaced completely after 5 years.

So - to get to the point, would ye flush ye're rads and refill with new water/antifreeze in keeping with this schedule?

Made me a bit nervous of my own Motor since & perhaps might save some heartache for others on here?
