Ryanair carry on luggage

Four of a kind

I will be doing alot of european travel this year i'm looking at getting a carry on bag, which will cut out a few fee's etc...

I currently have a bag with the following dimensins:

22" x 14" x 9"

Can anyone tell me if Ryanair are very strict on their carrry on allowance? I know their specifications are: 21.5" x 15.5" x 8"

They can be very strict but there's no consistency. Recently in Malaga they checked the size of every piece of hand luggage at the boarding gate. Any piece that didn't fit in the "frame" they have for measuring bags was deemed hold luggage and the passengers were charged there and then.

A few people were caught out because the bag might technically have been within the limit but when it was stuffed with drink and handbags etc. it didn't fit!

I find that it's the thickness that causes the problem whether it's a suitcase or a sausage bag. No well packed bag will ever fit easily into the cage thing.

I've a suitcase which is 20 x 14 x 8 empty and I've had it refused twice. That being said, it's very hit and miss, I've also used without any problem on other occasions.

So whats the precedure if i'm stopped before I board the plane because of the size of my carry on?

You pay whatever the baggage fee is and they take the bag and put it in the hold.

You will be asked to fit it into a kind of container they have there. if it doesn't fit then you will have to pay 40 euro(I think). Your best bet if you think your bag might be a bit dodgy, is to be careful when you are getting in the queue. Try to get in behind a person with a big bag. This should ensure thye get stopped, and not you

I don't mind paying the €30 fine then if thats the case. The bag above though that I'm thinking of getting is just a "tiny" 1 inch over the max allowed. I wonder would they be that strict? I have'nt flown with ryanair in over 2 years so I don't know how particular they are.

They have become almighty strict in the last year, especially in Dublin. If you taking Ryanair back from the continent you will be fine. But Dublin is a different story.

They would be that strict, because they are absolute *****. If the bag doesn't fit in their measuring frame you will have to pay to put it into the hold. On some flights they check everyone's bags so I wouldn't risk it.

Yes Ryanair are strict.

Also I think you should get a small case with wheels a la George Clooney in his new film "Up in the air"

..and if they don't have the facility to collect the fee from you, they can deny you and your bag boarding.

Not worth the risk. Get a smaller bag, or a soft bag.

The bag above that I'm getting is half an inch longer than their 21.5 inch dimensions, 1.5 inches shorter in with that their 15.5 inch max and 1 inch thicker than their 8 inch max.

They won't consider the measurements, it doesn't matter if it is just over, or just under or whatever, they have a metal fame for measuring the bags, you slip your bag inside the frame, if it doesn't fit in the frame you can't take it as hand luggage. I'm sorry but there is no way around this, you should consider buying a different bag, I have a small suitcase with wheels which I guess is the maximum size allowed as it just fits into their measuring frame.
