If you want to try road biking, get a road bike not a hybrid.

Agreed, road bikes for the road, hybrids for... hybriding.

They work well for pootling around town or moderate spins up to 30-40km say.

I thought a hybrid was a move towards road cycling and can be used for going to the shops and that?
plus seems a bit cheaper to get me into it,and maybe move up if i want to.

Nah I don't agree - I bought a hybrid a few years ago for getting in and out to work on - if you spend 500 Euro on a hybrid you should be getting something decent that will last a few years.
It's a good bike to start cycling in and out of work on, and going for a spin at the weekend up to say 30/40Kms. Once you get to that stage, you can invest in a decent road bike.

Yes, a €500 hybrid is likely going to be better quality than a €500 road bike- mainly as road bike shifters are so expensive while flat bar ones are far cheaper.

It will also be better at stuff like going to the shops and more likely to take a rack and panniers, and mudguards. If you want to be able to strap stuff on the back hybrid is probably better.

A hybrid can be a very good introduction but a spin in the country of any distance is a lot more pleasant (and faster) on a road bike.
