May need to replace MBP (2007) screen - alternatives?

My MBP got a bit of a clatter the other night. Lying on the side of my bed, closed, it slid off and the hinge edge of it smacked against the ground. Now the screen doesn't light up but with a flashlight I can see that the LCD display still functions.

I hope to get it linked up to a monitor tonight to test that everything else is OK.

CompuB Limerick and Mactivate quoted me €650 incl. VAT and €585 excl. VAT respectively.

I'm wondering (a) if this is truly necessary and (b) if there's a cheaper alternative. For example, sourcing a new LCD screen and installing myself or with the assistance of someone.

The pain is I'm living in Africa at the moment and Apple support in South Africa is nearly non-existent, a pain and very expensive.

The quotes I've received today have been extortionate. The best price I got so far was from Bondigroup in Dublin. Very helpful-sounding, too.

What are people's experiences with them?

I think due to the value of the machine nowadays it's not viable to fix
