I learned to write using Vere Foster copybooks and to this day most people express surprise at my penmanship. I'd like to get hold of them for my son to use.

Were they ever used in Ireland, and does anyone know where I can get them from? I did see a few in Easons many years ago and I now regret not buying them.

What were they like? Around what year were they used? I can remember ones with a round tower on them. There's a scene in 'Ryan's Daughter' where Robert Mitchum's teacher character is correcting copybooks..they're the ones I remember. I wouldn't say they were around at the time the film was set but likely they were during the filming around 1970.
I also remember the handwriting ones that had a high cross(I think) on them.

The name rings a bell. Did they have blue covers? I remember using a copy book in 1st class - 1960 - when we were learning to write that had a red line half way between the blue ones to show us where to stop forming the small letters (I know that sounds confused but can't think of a better way of describing it - old age has caught us I'm afraid).

Did you ever manage to get your hands on any?

I'm asking because I used them in the late 1980's and wanted some for our daughter. This is because her last school report bemoaned her bad handwriting but the suggested solution was that she use a computer for her homework from now on!

I couldn't believe it! Any suggestions gratefully received.

What beautiful books. Surely there must be something similar available today. I never heard of him but he sounds quite remarkable. He did some genealogical work too. Here is his bio:

I did a bit of searching on Vere Foster and found the following:

    One sold on Etsy:
    http://www.etsy.com/listing/78109948/vere-forsters-copy-book-no-10-lettering

This site is “The Visual Telling of Stories”. It’s a bit strange to say the least and I found it tricky to navigate but I have never used it before. Images of the copybooks are here:
    http://www.fulltable.com/vts/a/artman/wr.htm

They have it listed at $8.00 here. Don’t know if its legit or not. Enter Vere Foster in the search box on the left:

I suggest you ask on the Collectibles forum on Boards someone there might be able to help you.

Edit: the first link is not working but maybe shorten the url to the core and it might work.
