Salvage opportunity

Just saw this news and it piqued my interest

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2010/0113/waterford.html

I am considering heading to the beach in Waterford today.

These missing containers obviously contain gold bullion or maybe just bales of cash. [This is how multinational conglomerates repatriate profits.]

Why else would they get the coastguard to tell us they are full of "hazardous material"?

Anyway, has anyone a van I could borrow for a day or two?

Didn't this happen in England awhile back, and people were getting free BMW bikes and everything.

Saying that, one of these containers has hazardous materials in it apparently.

Even hazardous materials can be valuable, perhaps full of plutonium :)

It'd be just my luck that they'd be full of feckin baled cardboard off to be recycled somewhere.

But then the ship had grounded on a sandbank I believe.

Those freight containers are far from water-tight I imagine.
They're bound to be at the bottom of the sea now.

    .

One of the containers was the personal effects of one family that was moving back to South Africa, so it was more akin to burglary than salvage

Some of them had hazardous material in them - sodium bromate - it causes burns and ulcerations if it comes in contact with skin, lovely. The others had firelogs and bird food in them. One or two have sunk according to the coast guard. They were a 20 miles off shore so it will be a while before we get anything landing.

If those chemicals leak it could be disastrous for the coast & especially Tramore

So I was off the mark with the bullion idea.

I now don't need the van.

ok, say its valuable... what you going to do then... the Buy and Sell? Look up the name of the ship, find out what they usually carry or transport... where was it coming from / going to etc

This is some very useful information dark side. Thank you for putting things in a clearer perspective.

Sodium bromate...yes, actually, it's worth billions! Stuff your vans full of the stuff! BTW It's better to use your bare hands when handling it, makes you a man, so it does.

No seriously though, don't do it.

Eh isn't this stealing? I think that problem arose when the ship in England ran aground too. Appartenly you can't just take stuff thats not your because it happens to be on a beach.

I heard that it is legal once it's off the boat, it's just salvaging the stuff.

You are supposed to report it to the receiver of wrecks, in the UK I expect Ireland and an equivalent person or organisation.

AFAIK you'd need to intercept it in international waters, once it reaches land anyway it's no longer up for grabs.

If it fell off the boat it's up for grabs, if it was thrown overboard to lighten the ship in an emergency it isn't.

The chemical you're all talking about was Sodium Bromate, which is a strong oxidant..

In the UK the people were ordered to return the wood and BMW bikes or they would be charged with theft by finding.

Salvage law states that if it's not anchored or chained down then you cna take it. Many people repairing boats go to old ship building docks, wait till the tide goes out and nab themselves some goodies.

Technically, if a boat is left unattended on a beach for an elongated period of time, not in use and isn't ited down (i.e. abandonedd) she's yours. Could be a dinghy or a freighter.

The police always say stuff like that to appear tough in a situation like that. The fact is that they couldnt be because taking stuff that's washed up is perfectly legal once the owner isn;t present and guarding them.

    Still in the UK but
The goods still belong to their owners, whether they are stuck in containers on the stricken vessel, or washed up on the shore. Contractors have already been brought in to clean up the beach and return anything to its rightful home.

You can only take goods to keep them safe to be returned to there owner.

Government probably has the army working night and day to recover as much as they can so they can sell it on. Every little helps to fight the recession.

Government will probably set up an emergency team to deal with this, going by the response time for the freezing weather i'd expect it up be operational by late October

I heard eating handfulls of washed up sodium bromate will give you mystical powers.

It's where I get my imaginative and informative posting style from.
