Starting falconry

I've often thought about getting into falconry and buying a Peregrine of my own, but I have no idea where to start. Who do you get a Peregrine off? I guess you need a license too? I do know quite abit about Irish birds of prey, so I guess thats a start.

Does anybody know anything about falconry? and where I should start?

    Many thanks
    fabhcun

i looked into it a bit ago, you need to find someone that will train you and then apply for a licence, a ranger will come and look at your set up first, it can take up to a year before you would get a licence, most people starting get harris hawks, they are meant to be the easiest to train, but still require huge amounts of work, i would think it would be hard to get a licence for any other bird with out huge amount of training

I'm not exactly knowledgeable on the subject but I know there's a few places around that do introductory courses on falconry and the like. Mostly they cater for people with a flighting interest in it but I'm sure they do more advanced courses to get you started.

Try here maybe, know a lad who done a "hawk walk" and enjoyed it. They will at least be able to point you in the right direction I'm sure.

Thanks for the advice guys, will look up dave999 and the website also.

I did read alright that people do start on Harris hawks or Red-tails so I guess thats what I might have to start with. I can imagine alright that there is alot of work involved but it sounds interesting though

    Thanks again

Hi I only started last year and as someone has already said you will need someone with experience to help you out from time to time. A good place to start is reeding books on falconry and try find someone you can go out with and see them fly thier birds. So if I can help you out in anyway just ask. If you need to know anything about getting the licence or anything else.
