Just wondering about this. Basically I'm gonna be on the dole for a short period. I play poker a fair bit and sometimes i win, sometimes i lose. However, it is possible that id get a nice win here and there. How would this affect my dole? Say I was on dole for a year and made like 10k at poker and wanted to put it into my bank account(This probably wont happen!) Just wondering do I have to declare it and would the dole office be pissed if they found out?

You're allowed savings of 20,000 if I'm correct so for that part you'd be fine with under that amount in your account.

As to the legalities of claiming the dole and making a profit from gambling, I dunno where the social stands on that one.

Keep your win receipts of some sort I guess if it ever is asked of you how you came by the money in your account. I'm not sure if you could be classed as a professional poker player (is that even a profession in Ireland?) and if you could be at odds with the social welfare because of that.

    Interesting question though :)

It's not employment, it's gambling, so they won't care if your playing Poker. It's not a guaranteed income, and as said above, it won't affect you until you have x amount of money in your savings.

Much like they won't care if you keep doing football bets or horse bets, etc.

However, if you tell them that you're sitting at your laptop or in a casino all day, every day, then they will be pissed, because you're supposed to be making an effort to be looking for work.

so you consider yourself a professional poker player or is it that you are so bad at poker that the taxpayer has to support you?

    curious...
