Hi all, just wondering anybody here studying commerce or know someone in commerce? If so is it possible to do a H Dip in Eduacation and come out as a 2nd level teacher of the business subjects?

    Help appreciated, Thanks

    Basically, yes.

My sister did the BComm, majored in econometrics. At the time there were no jobs, so she went back and did the HDip in Ed teaching Business Studies and SPHE to Junior Cert and Biz Org/Accoounting/Economics to Leaving Cert. She took a year off in between the BComm and HDip, during which she did some subbing in her old secondary school and some other schools; I don't know if this would have helped her application for the HDip, but it did give her some practice prior to official TP.

However, when she finished the HDip, she found it very difficult to find work teaching the business subjects. Between the current push towards the sciences, and the demographic of the majority of secondary business teachers (some huge proportion are in the 35/40-50/55 age group because of a recruitment drive and change in LC emphasis during the late 70's/early 80's, so no retirements), very few posts came up, even part-time ones. It would be worth looking at education posts to see if this is still the case - she qualified a few years ago. In the end, she went back and did the full three years in Mary I to become a primary teacher as she simply couldn't find a full-time secondary job. If you have connections this wouldn't be a problem, so ignore. Otherwise just bear in mind that full-time secondary jobs are few and far between these days, and you may spend some years part-time before you can qualify for a full-time post.

    thanks for the comments lads.

i checked the H.dip in eduacation course on UCCs website and it says 5 credits can only be taken in business studies and 5 must be taken in another subject which you have done to degree level, but the thing is if you do commerce, the business studies is the only credits you can take!

therefore its not possible as far as i can see.

I do not think this is correct. Please read the regulations posted here, under the heading National University of Ireland, Cork. You will see that the BComm from UCC confers eligibility to apply for the teaching of Accounting, Business and Economics.

thats great. thanks very much for the help.

il defenetly consider taking this route now. i would love to go into teaching and i know business teaching is one of the hardest jobs to get but if im unlucky, its still a good all round degree for another employment outside of eduacation if things dont seriously pick up in this country and vacancies dont become available.

    thanks again lilmrsDahamsta!

I study Commerce. Heres a copy and paste of what i typed on the leaving cert forum about it a few months ago.

I've just completed 2 years of my degree and absolutely love it.
4 year degree. The points have been 445 the last two years.

Subjects covered in first year include: law, government, business maths and statistics, management, marketing, food business, management information systems, market economy and financial accounting.
First year is very much exam orientated, most continuous assesment are exams with the exception of statistics, management and marketing where there are projects. Law is the only 100% end of year exam

Subjects covered in second year: People and organisations, consumer behaviour, market research, enterprise planning and processes, written and oral communication, Business system analysis and design, management accounting and economics of enterprise.
The following subjects are optional, students can pick any 1 of the following 3:
    1) Law (worth 10 credits) 100% end of year exam
    2) 2 government modules (worth 5 credits each) essays and presentation for continuous assesment and end of year exams
    3) Statistics and Maths (5 credits each) continuous assesment are tests and project i think and end of year exams
Second year there is more continuous assesment. Consumer behaviour, market research and enterprise all involve group projects.
People and organisations has an essay and case studies.
Written and oral communication which is basically english involves in class tests, reports and giving presentations with a percentage of final grade for attendance and in class contribution

Going in to third year. You have 3 options:
    1) Pick major field of study and minors and do half year of college and 6 months work experience
    2) Pick major field of studyand minors and do half year of college and 6 months reseach project
    3) Do 3rd year in college in America or Canada. (which i am going to do!biggrin.gif)

Dont know much about fourth year. Will worry about that when i get to it!

If you have any queries about the course, subjects, UCC in general feel free to PM mecool.gif

also it might be worth thinking about doing the Comm International course esp if your interested in teaching as having a language would be another way of getting your foot in the door of a school
