Not sure if this has been discussed or not but who's everyone's favourite & hated boxing commentator / analyst

I know Max Kellerman gets fierce abuse about talking so slowly and some people think Buncey just loves the sound of his own voice.
I find it hard to listen to the showtime guys

I cant stand listening to jim watt the mans a bolox as far as im concerned, oh yea dave boy mcauley gets on my tits repeating himself all the time, that doesnt half get annoying after the hundred time of " if he takes a short step to the side and bang it in" about a hundred times he said it at andys last fight ffs . I like listening to Barry mcguigan when he commentates, he knows his **** and is unbiased.

The whole Sky boxing panel are insufferable.

Jim Watt is just the intensely annoying Scottish cherry on top.

Best: Richie Woodhall - points out stuff that you miss and gives a genuinely knowledgeable assessment of the action instead of general platitudes that anyone could come out with - e.g. Jonnie NelsonWorst: I'm afraid to say it but it has to be RTE's very own Jimmy Magee. I hate to knock one of our own but the guy is abysmal. For someone that it supposed to know a lot about the sport he comes across as a chancer that is just trying to bluff his way through and he makes more mistakes than the designers of the Titanic. Please RTE have the balls to give him the boot and bring in someone fresh that knows the sport.

Max Kellerman is a moron, the way he handled the Mayweather, Mosley talk in the ring after Mayweathers win over Marquez was pathetic, he wanted to show he was the main man instead of letting the 2 real men say what they wanted to say, any commentator with any sort of cop on would of loved to make the most of the hype that would have come off a big call out etc...
oh yea dave boy mcauley gets on my tits repeating himself all the time.

I was boxing in the seniors a few years back against this lad who was 6,2" and i was 5, 6", he was like a rake! anyway i used a high guard as he would have been scoring to the forhead very easily if i used my normal guard, all the way through the fight Mcauley kept on going on about my guard and how i was open for body shots!! i did not even get hit 1 body shot in the fight and if your man had tried it would have left him so easy to hit, but to the untrained eye he made me sound like an eejit!!

Pretty bad and as said he just gets something in his head and repeats over and over!!

Personally i like Steve Bunce he does like his own voice but is passionate and talks to the fighters like a real converstaion instead of like the robotic way most commentators do..

Really ?, I find them far better than HBO/Versus/ESPN or any of the other American channels.

Al Bernstein is my favourite 'colour' commentator, gives very good incite and only consistently repeats something if it really is a major factor.

Least favourite would be Teddy Atlas, his voice is annoying and a lot of the time he'll just talk ****(with weirder analogies than Jimmy Magee).
He also will keep talking about fighting tall/small if there is anything more than an inch and a half between the fighters in either height or reach, very annoying.

For main commentator I like Ian Darke, I know there's many that don't really take a shine to him but his voice is very dramatic and really helps make an event.

john Rawling annoys me at times as a main commentator, his voice is good for it and he's well used to calling fights but he always manages to say something that's either factually incorrect or say knockout when he means knockdown, little things that are annoying.

Jimmy Magee isn't a proper boxing commentator so shouldn't be considered, plus the guys hilarious and his commentary is enjoyable from that perspective when it's seemingly crap from a quality point of view.

hate jonnie nelson, jim watt and larry merchant(even though i admire his bluntnes and straight to the point attitude his mono tone voice wrecks my head) like jimmy mcgee cos i find im funny but as an analyist he is terrible!!

John Rawling, Richie Woodhall the best

Jimmy Magee and Jim Watt are the worst

My favorite is Al Bernstein, Gil Clancy and Barry Tompkins.

Of the ones closer to home, Woodhall is very good. Jimm Watt is not a favorite of mine, quite annoying actually. I don't mind Duke McKenzie. I like Bunce a lot, his passion and enthusiasm are great. Dave Boy from Eire really irks me; it's like he's having a freaking seizure every time a decent shot lands

My favourite is Barry McGuigan- enthusiastic, very knowledgeable, makes interesting points and doesn't become hysterical over insignificant things like some commentators/analysts do. Most hated is Jimmy Magee, I always mute it when hes commentating.

Favourites: Maguigan and Woodhall for their unbiased insight, Magee (please... do not adjust your internets)... Purely for the novelty. He always brings the jokes and the awful similes&metaphors etc. I prefer to him to McAuley but its good to see former champs making some money out of the sport when they retire, and in all fairness... it is only rte after all, the irish peolpe want names and voices the recognise.

Bunce is good, I like his passion, good knowledge, unpredictable at times and I'm with him on one thing... Kellerman is an idiot. Off the top of my head he is the worst, talking slow I can deal with and understand, there is an international audience many of them speak english as a second language, he speaks clear and concise which is fine but he doesnt do it well, too robotic etc. He made a b@lls out of mayweather-mosely after pbf-jmm fight.

I also like the Darke and Watt on sky, not for their insight as such, but it wouldnt be the same without them.

All of the Irish boxers give a good account of themselves when on rte in fairness.

Yeah as is the general concensus; Jimmy McGee is absolutely dire. I think my breaking point was when he totally missed the shot that nearly puréed Bernard Dunne towards the end of his last fight. I think he was going on about a milkman or something at the time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58,230 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Forget him missing shots, that is almost forgivable, what isn't forgivable is that when a mega shot lands resulting in drama, Jimmy treats it exactly like any other bloody shot.

"And Dunne is down", is what he said in the most nonchalant and delicate tone after Bernard hit the floor the first time vs. PK.

Quite surprised to see Larry Merchant featuring in a few. I think he's great and like that he doesn't pander to the egos of PBF etc.

When Vernon Forrest beat Ike Quartey in a fairly controversial win, Forrest was thanking his family etc in his post fight interview. Merchant asked him would he like to thank the judges too! Couldn't see Marty Morrissey saying that to Andy Lee...;)
