Cracked Fog Lamp -NCT Failure?

My 06 Civic is due it's NCT next month and got it serviced today. They told me that one of the front bumper fog lamps is cracked (which it is and has been for 2 years) and that the car will fail as a result.

Cost of a new one - 187 Euro + VAT + Labour. Nice!

Going to take a chance on it trying it anyway but just wondering if it's true that it will fail?

Seems over the top because the crack is a straight crack in the glass only.
I very, very rarely use them to be honest.

Take both lamps out for the test.. if they are not fitted then they dont have to work... Put them back in after you pass.187 Euro + VAT + Labour....Saved.

Would the fact that there would be 2 big holes in the bumper not affect that? Nice idea though I must say!

    From their website:-
Free re-tests cover minor items, for example, a visual inspection to check that faulty windscreen wipers have been replaced.

Those holes are "Air Vents" in the front Spoiler/Bumper :D

OR and I know this mght sound crazy, he could fix something thats broken.

OP you'll pick one up in a scrap yard handy enough, or search the online UK ones, they do very reasonable postage and those fog lamps are usually a doddle to fit.

Had a quick look at the manual, sections 26-33. It lists poor beam alignment and about 9 other items as failures but nothing about broken glass/lens on a fog lamp. The fact that it explicitly lists a broken lens as a failure for all other lamps but excludes front fogs & spots seems to confirm that it's not a failure item.

No. I removed mine because one was cracked and it passed with two big holes in the bumper. You'll fail for a cracked bumper alright though.

Sorry for bumping up an old thread but I did the NCT today and passed, cracked lens and all.

I guess it shows it's always worth putting a car through without spending silly money on hearsay.

Your 187 euro richer now..If you still wanted to replace it anyways go to a scrap yard and get a part and pop it in yourself...

I would have failed it, its in the manual:

    auxillary lamp-condition-cracked/fractured-Fail Refusal

    Only joking!:D:D

    Could not resist....

I got pulled up on a cracked fog light before Christmas, I just taped over it and they passed it. I think their concern is pedestrian safety.

A cracked lens would drive me spare and I'd have to replace it. Sometimes I wish I wasn't so anal :o

Most people simply take out the fog lamp, its pretty rare to see someone coming back with a new lamp fitted.

I had a really heated "discussion" with a woman a couple of months ago, her car failed, because the car had no switch for the fog lamps. Whoever fitted them, simply wired them up to the dips, so they came on, the moment you switched on the lights.

She simply could not understand, that a fog light switch is a legal requirement, she kept saying "why would you switch them off?".........

I had a replacement on order, it was just handier to tape it up on the spot and get the NCT cert :)

Oh I thought we are supposed to drive with fog lights on at all times day and night. (only joking:D)
Just one silly question to you, When someone takes the spots out does the switch need to be disconnected during test?

I have an 04 Civic, cracked fog lamp (really driving lamp) on the left hand side. I didn't have any probs with the NCT... they didn't even turn them on.

tape over the holes and the cracked bumper and Id say you would pass...probably a different matter with rear fogs(not sure if you are obliged to have them or not)

Rear fogs are not a requirment for the Nct, I have had tons of jap imports over the years and they don't have fog lamps on the back and they all passed the test. My jap import lancer mx passed the test earlier this week to.

I have slightly more than a crack in the glass, in fact 95% of the glass is missing! The bulb is working fine. NCT due this month, do you think they'll notice?
