Emergency Tax

A friend of mine switched jobs early last year but only recently procured a p45. The problem is that she won't be returning to work in her new job until June 2010 and therefore since Emergency Tax is returned through the payslip (I think!) she can't claim a refund on the substantial ammount owed.

My question is, Can she send the P45 into the local tax office and claim the refund directly from them?

Hi guys, anyone have an answer for this?

Mods feel free to move if it's not in the right forum...

    Thanks.

Once she has a p60 from 2009 (employers are obliged to provide them afaik by Feb. 15th) then she can do a tax return for 2009 and will have any tax she is due back refunded to her.

If she has left the job she switched to, then she will need both P45's for 2009 and can do a tax return based on that.

If you go to the tax office with your paperwork and request a review, they can go over the figures and any refund due can be made by cheque in the post. I did this a couple of years ago.
