Digital Piano for Beginner?

    Craic all,

I'm looking to get my first digital piano but haven't got a breeze about 'em. I've tried asking on piano forums but I just get a load of snobs and purists telling me to go ahead and spend 50K on a concert grand.

All I ask out of it is a piano sound, couldn't care about the bells and whistles, weighted keys so if I have to do an exam on an acoustic my fingers won't crumble under the strain and a midi or usb connection so I can hook it into my computer.

Budget is prolly about 650ish, any more and I'd have to sell a kidney. If there's cheaper I'd be happier!

Anyone here in the know and can offer advice?

    Thanks! :pac:

Best bet is to check out thomann.de They have great deals on digital pianos and you'll get one several hundred euro cheaper than you would here.

Not 100% true, Casio is priced really well here. The AP200 is €899 here and from the Uk works out at about €750.00 before delivery, so to get it here and have it delivered and have somewhere to call if there was a problem for €150 more ?

Also Roland Pianos are priced really well here! The myth that the new is way way cheaper is over rated. Its always going to cost a little more to get it in a shop but thats down to the fact that you can walk in an try it out, talk to a professional and have somewhere to come back to without the hassle of waiting for the UPS / DHL man to come and collect/drop off.

Hope the search goes well, as i said Casio or Roland would suit well.

Don't listen to the snobs about acoustic pianos. Yes, there's a huge difference, but who cares? Get what you can afford and play on an acoustic whenever you get the chance - I have a few mates who accommodate me playing for a half hour every now and then :)

I went on eBay and got an old Roland EP-7 (I was looking for one specifically 'cause it's the piano that Steven Drozd from The Flaming Lips plays live) for $75. Shipping was super-expensive, and it arrived damaged so I had to pay for a repair, but the point is the older ones can be found cheap :p

I had this particular model in mind, 'cause I wanted the same one as Steven, but it's pretty outdated obviously, so maybe you wouldn't want to go down my route at all, but I think it's worth devoting even a few seconds' thought too :)

a second hand roland rd-170 is a good bet - i have one after searching for a decent one like yourself , and very happy i got it - its built like a tank , weighted keys and good piano sound .

they are about 7 or 8 years old or more - but have a great rep .

you easy pick one up for 450 - 500 max

I've read lots of good reviews about the casia privia.

    http://www.thomann.de/ie/casio_px_130_we_privia.htm

Apparently its the best in the price range.

Think I'm going for the Privia PX-830, nice and compact so it will fit in my room, ivory touch keys, nice sound, USB ticks all the boxes!

I upped the budget cause I realized I'll be using this for a VERY long time and wouldn't want to run into upgrade issues down the line... At least till I get one of those acoustic grands :D

What would ya reckon about getting it sent over from the UK, would ya trust a safe arrival? I'd buy irish but nowhere stocks them yet.
