UCC Victoria Lodge - newbie question

I'm heading off to UCC next year (Electrical Engineering) and I've settled on Vic Lodge for accommodation. Only problem is I haven't a clue how to book! Their site doesn't seem to mention 2010/11 at all, and when I emailed them they said they'd handle it some time after the new year. So when do they start taking bookings?

Also, really weird question, but do they offer pots and pans and such or do you have to bring your own  I know....

    Thanks in advance!

Yep pots and pans are provided for all the housemates to share. Pretty much everything you need is given all you have to bring is your self and some bed clothes. As far as I know, Victoria Lodge as well as the other accommodations dont start taking bookings until about February/March. Theres no point bothering them til then Id say. When they do open up for booking there will be a shortcut to an application form up on the ucc website.

im writing to u to tell u not to book that place . im currently staying there and its a complete ****hole.the apartments are much too small, especially the kitchen.at night its really hard due to the constant ringing of the doorbell which is accesible by almost 200 people to freely ring.the fire alarms go off about twice a week and usually at 3 or 4 in the morning and the power goes when the weather gets cold and they tell us not to use our radiators in the cold and drafty rooms.the staff are horrible <snip> Please don't name individual staff members</snip>if you have any sense dont stay there.its really overpriced and i think the student village acommadation would be a much better bet for you

The problem is that I haven't found one place that hasn't got bad
rep and doesn't cost €5000+, and Victoria Lodge at least doesn't have a confusing website. Yes I heard about the fire alarms, not about the doorbell and the cold wouldn't bother me since my bedroom is currently 12'C. Really I'll probably be moving out again after the first year so I just don't want a place that's too bad (eg DCU accommodation). I haven't heard anything about Student Village before, so I'm not exactly keen to jump in...

12c is a luxury compared to some Student accommodation!

Maybe you should research all of the accomodation...

Lodge is way down on my list.

By eck thees reet! When ah wuz an undergrad, ten of us; ten of us mind, lived in a shoe box. Luxury, sheer luxury that wuz. Students around the corner lived in a sewer, but at least they had running water.....hot sometimes, when the pubs emptied! One student I knew, lived up an elephants arse....but at least he was warm! None of us, none of us mark thee, woulda lived in Vic Lodge....even for us, that would have been a descent into hell, too far

I did (could only actually see 3 UCC Campus Acc ones and brookfield though, haven't been in Cork much) and so far Vic Lodge came out top (cable internet, nice location, not as claustrophobic as brookfield).

You should try Victoria Mills. Easily the best student accommodation and its closer to UCC than Victoria Lodge. :D Been living there almost two years now and wouldn't consider anywhere else. Vic Lodge apartments are tiny compared to Vic Mills!

dont worry im in vic lodge now and its grand, iv only had random drunk people ring my door bell twice so dont worry about the 200 people thing. the power only went off cause the system was overloaded.
the fire alarm hasnt gone off in 2 weeks now which is a long time for vic lodge.
i dont no anyone thats had any problem with the staff. and sometime that know one has said is that its a good place for flat partys and the wardens are ok, if u want vic lodge go for it:)
P.S. the student village is next to a busy road and very nosie at night and vic mills is realy dear!!

The Student Village is lovely Id highly recommend it! Everything you could want broadband, chorus etc. Nice homely feel while not too small, the staff are really nice and always quick to fix problems! And theres a good atmosphere round you get to know most of your neighbours. Near to college also you should def look into it

Don't go to castlewhite as tis still ruined from the flooding, also I had to share a shower and toilet with 5 others in 1st year! Only thing going for it is it's proximity to UCC.

I live in Vic Mills which is lovely (tad biased), but uni hall is nice also. Haven't been in vic lodge, only heard good things tho!

Viccy mills is good for parties, and the rooms are a decent size and all are en suite. Kitchen has a dishwasher which is handy. :)

    Hope this helps!

After a bit more looking around I've decided on Vic Mills (if I can get it - don't know when they're booking) cause I hear it's quieter than most places, big, has a diahwasher (!!) and not much more expensive than Vic Lodge! I hear the craic's a better than Vic Mills (more leniant wardans) while I've heard plenty of good about Brookfield from someone I know, but the small rooms put me off :pac:

I think Vic Mills will be taking bookings from non current residents from next week or so, give them a buzz to check because they will book out in minutes.

I've lived in Vic mills for a few years now and would recommend it to everyone, I really think it is the best of the lot by far. I lived in farranlea before and will not recommend that at all, disater of a place. Vic Lodge is not too bad really but I just heard a load of fire engines flying past and I bet that's where they are headed. Havent really heard great things about Brookefield, and definitely don't consider Jennings Pool or Victoria Station or Castle White. The village isn't too bad I've heard from friends and the same for uni hall. Probably recommend uni hall after vic mills.

Like really minutes or can I wait till 1-ish?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 457 ✭✭Celtise

Well I dunno what it was like last year but the year before when I had to do that, I was refreshing a free mins before it was meant to go live and got to book early and my then roommate booked at 5 past and she was like 100th on the waiting list...she eventually got in though!

@Celtise, Is Farranlea that bad? Iv heard some good stuff and bad stuff about it but do the cons outweigh the pros??

In my opinion yes, but really there are worse places as the accomodation itself there is nothing major wrong with it like mildew or rats or stuff in other apts/houses.

Vic lodge - nothing like the photos, any friends who live there, hate it

uni hall - not open to first years unless an Irish speaker

vic mills - big, but kinda clinical...all white like a hospital...

the village - 15 min walk from college, not pleasant in the rain, but excellent apart from that

farranlea - have heard only bad things

castlwhite - I live here, going back next year. Don't believe the "Castle****e" rubbish. Rooms are quite spacious (for student accom.), loads of storage, excellent internet (UCC network), big kitchen, tv has built-in dvd...only 4 channels, but you can't have everything in life. Sharing a bathroom with 4 people, not as bad as you would think, and there's a really good vibe if you get to know your neighbours

@notnormal, Im glad ive finally found a positive comment about Castlewhite! Ive it booked for next year and honestly still dont know what to make of the place from all the comments...are the staff ***** there or what? and was your place the same as in the photos on the website?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49 notnormal

yes, the apartment looks exactly like the pictures on the website...when you first move in at least.

The staff are grand, very fair, that is, they'll treat you with as much respect as you treat them. For some reason, they get cranky if the fire alarm is set off in your apartment during a house party :P

There is a great party atmosphere here during Fresher's week, RAG week, etc., but the past few weeks there've been exams and study breaks, and the place has been lovely and peaceful.

I can't recommend the place enough. When it's lashing rain and freezing cold, I'd never have been able to motivate myself to get out of bed and go to college from the likes of Vic Lodge haha :P

    Best of luck!

Mardyke Hall, people...it's nearer town and nearer college than every other place...its incredibly clean and very well maintained...

Went to Castlewhite this year, coming back again next year. Rooms are spacious, internet is fast, it's never too loud to sleep and it's the closest to the park, gym and college. Perfect for me !

Vic Lodge is very, very small and the alarm is constantly going off. Also, there is no wireless internet.

It's all much of a muchness though. Depends on your roomies more than anything else !
