Interesting this, 2 of England's home games in the 6N to be shown in 3D in 40 Odeon cinemas around the UK...the Welsh opener will also be shown. Going to be the first sporting events shown in 3D in europe.

Do they reckon they have a better chance of winning in 3D :)

    That's a great idea.

Very like what the Spaniards did with El Classico this year.

Although obviously if this is the first sporting event in 3D in Europe then an even more special version of what they did

You mean Mexicans. It was done in Mexico this year. Not Spain.

Would be very interested in seeing what the rugby would look like on 3D. However Im much more looking forward to looking at it on BBC HD on freesat ;)

Sony are planning the same idea for the FIFA World Cup in the summer, they are going to show a couple of games in a few major cities around the world including London.

Personally I would love to see these matches in 3D, particularly the Irish one as I have little chance of getting over to see the match in person.

So what I did was email one of the chains involved, Cineworld, in the hope that they would put the matches on in the Dublin Cineworld.
If enough people send them a message it could happen so here's the link to Cineworld contact:

    https://www.cineworld.ie/contact

Did not see the possibility of sport in 3D happening so soon!

Great news we get to see Guscott and Davies in another dimension, hopefully their punditry will no longer be paper thin :)

In terms of actually watching rugby in 3D I'd imagine it would be more exciting than football, GAA, monkey tennis (maybe not that one), etc. Watching lineouts and scrums being contested in 3D upclose should look cool but I wonder if it will be all camera angles or only those far away in the stand.

If this takes off and I hope it doesn't pay to view will take on a new meaning.

It would be nice if they mentioned where to find a list of which cinemas exactly will be showing it.

Think I'd still rather watch it in the pub though.

El Classico wasn't shown in any cinemas in Mexico this year, as far as I know. It was however shown in cinemas in Spain. Not in 3D, as I mentioned.

For sheer curiosity I would go. Test it out with the Welsh game and if its gack go to the pub for the Irish match

Well yeah, I'm definitely curious. My only concern would be that the atmosphere might be a tad ****e.

Same as. Nice one for the pioneers though.

Apparently 3D sports suffers a little, thanks to the flattening effect that telephoto lenses can have, it comes across almost like a 3d pitch with 2d paper cutouts running on it. Sounds slightly painful.

Also, sky sports cut from one angle to another very suddenly - prepare to be nauseated (I'd still try it for the Wales match though)

The 'El Clasico' in question is a huge game between Guadalajara (Chivas) v Club América in Mexico. This was played and shown in 3D last October.

I'm just happy for HD. I'm even watching Gridiron which looks fantastic and caught a class game last night between the Cardinals and Packers.

Hmmm might check it out if it is on in one of the cinemas here in Glasgow. Although will probably end up in the pub, beer > 3D ;)

    BBC cover the Six Nations.

Is there any realistic chance of it airing in Irish cinemas? There would be a great market, I've always thought it would be a good idea to put games in cinemas and now that HD and 3D is coming in it seems like the perfect time to follow through.

This event wont be happening in Ireland. Limited to UK cinemas only.

More than that, limited to selected English cinemas only by the looks of that website. Pity since both Cineworld and Odeon (aka UCI) operate here, but understandable seeing as these are England home games.

I note also that they are limiting the cinemas to ones with a licenced bar. To the best of my knowledge the only cinema in the Republic of Ireland with a fully licenced bar is Cineworld Parnell Street.

Considering they're using BBC commentary and have help from the BBC there are possibly licensing reasons why they can't do it in Ireland.

They're not showing it anywhere near me so off to the pub it is.

I've seen that there is Live 6 nations being shown in the UK in selected cinemas, does anyone know if this would be shown in Ireland also?

It may be just the England games but I would like to see this, sounds like a great idea?

    You haven't sen my local.......

Think it would be just a bit interesting that's all.

I'm pretty sure its just in England. Its pricey as well. I can imagine people turning up for the novelty and not bothering again. No booze = bleh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

If I could go for a game I didn't have a vested interest in, I would. Otherwise, no way I'd try this out for the Ireland vs. England game.

The ones they are doing in the UK have bars in the cinemas... well known we like a drink with the game!

I've always thought watching matches in cinema's would be cool. It would be nice if it had couches instead so you could sit comfortably with mates and chat while watching it on the big screen. Maybe a setup like the sugar club on Leeson St in Dublin.

Went along to a cinema here in the UK to see the game in 3D yesterday. Had never been to a 3D film or anything before and I have to say I found it to be an excellent experience. At times it felt like being in a corporate box on the half way line, but then with the close up pictures it really did feel like you were standing at the side of the pitch, needing to get out of the way to let Rory Best throw the ball in to lineouts!

The main 3D cameras were on the other side of the pitch to the regular TV cameras, so watching the highlights back on BBC was like coming home from a game you've been to and seeing everything from a different angle second time around. It wasn't BBC commentary either, it was an O2 commentator with Alan Quinlan doing analysis.

The cinema only had about 100 seats and it was maybe an 85/15 split English to Irish, so there was a bit of a lack of atmosphere in there, apart from the period of the second half when England went ahead. If there was any negative, it was that sometimes while you felt like you were looking at the game in the flesh, it rarely sounded like you were, at least in the cinema I was in anyway. I'd say it was good crack in the Savoy in Dublin though.

But if you get a chance to go to a 3D rugby game in future I'd definitely recommend it. It really is the closest you'll get to feeling like being at a game without actually being there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 575 ✭✭✭IrishKev

Would've loved to have been in Twickenham seeing Bowe going over for his second try. Any try against England deserves over the top celebrations but such a skillful and line-breaking one like that..... ooooh mama!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 575 ✭✭✭IrishKev

I know it's doubtful seeing as the game doesn't involve England, but will the Ireland v Wales game be on in the Savoy in 3D? I'm heading up to Dublin without the certainty of a ticket, so it'd be good to have that option.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 575 ✭✭✭IrishKev

    athtrasna wrote:
No, only Vue cinemas have this option at the moment. The only one in Dublin is in Liffey Valley and I'm not sure they're part of the trial.

Well I don't really mind which one it would it on, but will the game be on in any cinema in 3D? I'd probably go to anyone in Dub if it was and if i couldn't get a ticket

My post was wrong, Vue didn't get the contract in the end.

Anyway the trial was the two England home matches only, so no more this season.

Incidentally you quoted a post I deleted within 5 mins of posting and over 12 hours before you quoted it. Very odd!
