Interesting pics! Amazing to think these complexes where still staffed untill recently. Would love to take a tour of this place.

Apparently we had one in (or under?) Athlone but it's also been decommissioned

Not on Atlone, but there is a bunker in Kilkenny also. Built under the courthouse.

No, I just remember hearing about it during the Civil Defense exercises in the 80s. This was when the CD prepared for possible global armageddon and RTE spent the whole day broadcasting cheery radiation reports ...

Was one in Limerick as well manned by Civil Defence under the old town hall.Got a tour of it once.Looked like a combination of a barracks sleeping dorm,a old style telephone exchange,and a clean school canteen.
Designed rather to possibly protect agains t fallout.I wouldnt have given it much chance against fire or a blast.
