What's involved in getting a license to drive with trailer?

    Hi folks,

Hope this is the right spot to post in. Currently I have a full car license. I also want to be able to drive with trailer for sheep. What's involved in this? I know I'll need to do a theory test, but will there be a practical test too and if yes what's involved in that?

    Thanks in advance,

    ATB,

    John

If you have your full B licence then you need to get the provisional for the EB (which may involve the theory test) - then apply and pass EB test!

    so it's

    1) theory test for EB provisional
    2) EB provisional
    3) EB test

(lot of hoops to go through when you already hold a full driving licence)

You can tow a trailer larger than 750kg gvw provided the gvw of the combination does not exceed 3500kg (and the gvw of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle). (If you drive a vehicle with a gvw of 3500kg, you can only tow trailer with gvw of 750kg, i.e. total combination = 4250kg).

You should contact a school of motoring in your area to organise a few lessons. I know Naas SOM have their own jeep and trailer for lessons and tests (too far from you obviously). Best of luck!

Btw, anybody who passed their B test before 1989 (i.e old licences) are automatically entitled to categories EB and C1.
