    Hey guys,

    I'm in terribly poor shape (ie; I'm a fat bastard!) and would like something to do with my day/evening to pass a little time and to do something physical. I go to the gym the odd time here and there, though at the moment I'm on a FAS course, so I haven't been going to the gym much (it's usually packed in the evenings, so I don't bother, and instead go in the mornings before my course whenever I get the chance).

    Is this kinda thing OK for anyone to just jump into, or should you be in great shape before attempting to get involved? (by "this kinda thing" I pretty much mean everything and anything this forum covers. I've seen "BJJ" and such terms thrown around on here, but have no idea of the differences of each 'style' or anything like that. Aside from taking a quick mooch through this forum every now and again, i've no knowledge of anything it covers at all, if I'm being honest).

    So yeah... Just thought I'd put up this thread to see if anyone can offer any help or insight at all?

    You don't need to be fit to get involved. Have a look at what martial arts are available near you and try a few different ones. Most MA clubs will have junior classes or beginners classes and some even offer a free session to new comers.

    It's more fun than just hitting the gym and you will hopefully learn something very valueable. Hope it goes well for you.

    BJJ = Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ( Mainly ground grappling like in the Ulitmate Fighting Championship )
    TKD = Tae Kwon Do
    TMA = Traditional Martial Arts ( like Karate, Kung Fu )
    MMA = Mixed Martial Arts ( UFC type fighting )
    KM = Krav Maga

    ( Maybe the abbreviations could be included in a sticky or something ? Abbreviations can be difficult for the newbie )

    KKV

    I was in exactly your situation, I was obese as I was 6 foot tall and 24 stone and even though I had been following Mixed Martial Arts Sports as a fan for years I chickened out of actually doing it as a hobby because I was embarrassed about my weight.

    Eventually I just took the plunge and joined a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu club over a year ago and despite the first few weeks being full of nerves and doubts over my weight I stuck with it as I enjoyed it and there was a good group of guys at the club and in that year just from doing BJJ 2 or 3 times a week and cutting out the crap from my food I am now down to 15 stone and feeling far healthier and happier with myself.

    I cannot recommend joining a BJJ or MMA club enough as after the initial nerves are over its incredibly addictive as its good fun as well as good exercise.

    Cheers for the kind words guys.

    Don't suppose any of you know of any SD/MA clubs around the Drogheda area by any chance?

    Hi KKV. I did a quick search for clubs in Drogheda and came across this place www.westgatekenpo.com/about_kenpo_karate.html From first impressions they seem to be quite a decent place, as far as Kenpo clubs go. According to their site they are based in the Westgate fitness centre.

    In the same line, id say try the kenpo club or whichever option comes handy and give it a shot, u wil always learn from any discipline and start getting familiar with training. br
