How would one go about getting a copy or reading a copy of a Court transcript ?. Are public copies kept anywhere ?. Does it involved making an FOI ?.

    Thanks

Presuming the proceedings were in public, find name of stenography company involved, give them a ring and pay them.

There is a new digital audio recording system the courts service have been using, its only been in operation for about a year and many a time I have seen it not active, not sure how one goes about getting the tapes from that.

P.s. many court proceedings are not recorded by a stenographer

you cant get a copy of the transcripts unless you get a court order for them.

The court transcripts are primarily used to write up court orders and form the bones of the judges decision.

The only way to get a copy of the transcripts is to apply to the office of whatever court however, in order to look at a copy of them is to be one of the counsel /solicitor involved in the case.

I've had first hand experience at this trying to get copies of court orders refereed to in transcripts and I cant get them as counsel as I wasnt part of the original proceedings

if you find a way around it, I'd be ever so greatful :(

Difference between court orders and transcripts.

Court orders are produced by the registrars and can be bespoken from the court office.

Transcripts are produced by private stenographers.

I hope this is not a very silly question, but are the transcripts not on westlaw etc? I hope I am not way off here...

    in short no.

Transcripts are usually typed line by line with what each counsel, the judge and witness would say. They do form the biggest % of what you would download off westlaw/justis etc but what you download is the judges decision having heard all the evidence.

subtle difference but they are linked. Transcripts would be word by word account as to what is said. the judgment contains in more detail the judges thoughts and relevant caselaw (if necessary)

Thanks very much for clarifying this. I am glad I am not way off :D I just didn't know the difference!

    Cheers.
