b very careful wiggy buyin a second hand tank.they only have a short enough working life we got 11 years out of last one. the loss of the value of semen is nothing compared to the loss in time when u realise none of ur cows are goin back incalf!!!! few quid extra for new one and u have peace of mind.

    ah i..i know that!
was told by a man that fix's + tops them up--around our way...
have him looking out for 1 for me..as i have only maybe 10--14 animals a year needing ai'ing!
    currently use PG services!

Said not to purchase one's advertised in jounrals/papers! as u say-most of the times-they do be knackered..
    so i'm being carefull

hi wiggy, did you purchase that flask?, how many cow's would you want to justify buying a flask and if you don't mind how much do you intend to pay for one?
    thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭wiggy123

    unsure--what i'd paid for one..prob a 2nd hand one would do me...€200 maybe..just!
as only ahv the few cows--but there pedigree,so be nice to have a gd selection of ai straws!
i use PG,and at the moment they have 30 straws in storage belonging to me..
but sometimes when AI man comes-he mighn't have my straws--can be a hazzle!
also i buy the straws--then pay of them to be used..as in nearly double the price!

i'd be unsure-as what ur using the straws for like..suppose-what 100+dairy cows and maybe over 50 sucklers..if all bein ai's//a tank be good then! no?

does your ai man work for pg? can you not just say to him I want bull x and leave the straws to him, sounds like alot of hassle keeping them yourself and if there is a problem with tank its yourself will suffer, wonder if its expensive to do ai course for yourself, then it might be worth having a tank. by the way wiggy decided to give that cow a 2nd straw again sometime before lunch so hopefully one of the 2 will do the job

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭wiggy123

    fingers crossed Vander..it works!

ah true..put straws are stored,he goes there once a week to pick up new straws..plus i do have mayb 3 different men call out to ai for me-depending on when, like month/day! so all 3 cannot carry them..get me drift!
Ai course--nah,not do it..leave it to the pro's..
also with the straws--i am with PG, but be gd to get Ai straws from other Ai stations--people/locations!and i don't think Pg will store other ppl's(stations)straws..am unsure about that--must investigate,in forcoming season ahead!

so lets say you order straws from another company, how are they deliverd to PG? sorry if its a stupid question, just wondering how they manage to move the straws about

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭wiggy123

whelan1..u own ur own flask no?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,786 ✭✭✭✭whelan1

we bought aa straws these are delivered to enfield and then put in our ai mans flask - simple as - we then pay the ai man to inseminate the cow

no we work the same as you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭wiggy123

where do you get ur aa straws from whelan1?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,786 ✭✭✭✭whelan1

havent bought off other companies for a few years , normally we would buy them through the aa association

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,786 ✭✭✭✭whelan1

when you put the call in for serving the cow just say its a private straw -no probs they do it all the time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭wiggy123

ah right--i hear ya! do they charge you a fee for doing that..
say you bought aa straws from dovea/bova or privately..from abroad etc...
what do they charge! do u reckon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭wiggy123

private straw--but they will have it in there storage...tank!
as whelan1--i think my straws are stored either at headquartere--or at ballipusta no? think thats were i was told..
as Declan neary also somtimes has them in his tank! but if its ciaran shields or a paul cotter who come out--they don't have mine..get me drift

right well if you make a point that you want your straw or text either ks or paul; that your animal is for ai the next day or what ever they should have the right flask , a good few times they leave the whole flask here overnight and the other ai man can pick it up in the morning .. we got straws off dovea before no problem i am not sure of the cost maybe ring kevin loughlin he will know it all

cheers! thanks for that..i will suss it out for the forecoming season ahead...

Do you just want the tank or are you going to a.i yourself?Cost 600 for course new flask, and a pvc storage case!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,327 ✭✭✭jfh

that ai course is fairly full on by the sounds of it. any of you lads do it?
think you'd def want a large operation to jusify the cost.

that's a handy set up, buying your own straws and storing them, my father leaves it up to the AI man to decide on the bull, i'd prefer to choose myself, kind of interesting.

Have ya any Eurogene fellas in your area?
If not you could always join em. They'll give ya the flask for free, you'll have to pay for the training but you'll get the nitrogen free too. I worked for em for 7 years. Was handy extra income but took up a lot of my time so I jacked it in last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭wiggy123

prob just have the flask..get some else to ai for me--hav a few neighbouring farmers who do it...done the course--do there own dairy herds..
i'll not lose sleep over not gettin one--jusy on the look out for ok..as current situation is ok...
eurogene--unsure if there is someone--say there is in louth!
    that so pacoa--didn't know that

we get a folder with all the cows in it and 3 possible bull to use on each cow , it also has the full tag number of each cow so they have all been checked for inbreeding and if its a thing 1 straw isnt available we can go for 2 others

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭wiggy123

    thats fro ur dairy herd!
they hav that now in Pg--cross ref, help sheets! etc

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,786 ✭✭✭✭whelan1

ye ... for the dairy , i am sure they could do it for your angus too

    true...
only thing with the Angus...there ie more likely breedings..
as with dairy--there are thousands of cows,so more likely of inbreeding--get me drift!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,786 ✭✭✭✭whelan1

but at least if he gave you 3 sires to choose from there is a good chance they will have one of them in the flask:rolleyes:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭wiggy123

    true...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭wiggy123
