Favourite Generation of Games

Pretty simple question, the classic appeal of Red/Blue/Yellow versus the various new features that were added and removed as the series progressed!

I think it peaked at second generation (Gold/Silver/Crystal) for me... as that seemed to be the game that everyone had at the time and I was in primary school, so it was all very exciting!

Second generation was overall the best of the franchise even if Kanto felt a bit empty.

Third felt a bit disappointing given that they went back to one region, no animations in all but Emerald, no backwards compatibility and a lot of the most memorable Pokémon simply being unavailable at the start. Even when they became available, they tried to grab as much money from it as possible.

Fourth generation is a much bigger improvement simply because of online trading.

The fact that I was the only one I knew playing the third (and fourth) games might have had a bit of an affect on my enjoyment.

Personally the second generation always stuck out to me as my parents imported the games from the states so I had heard nothing about gyms, pokémon or anything. It was a completely unspoiled experience *nostalgia*

Also battling Red in Mt. Sliver was epic

I quite like the 4th but feel there was some untouched potential that they've only begun to maximise with Heart Gold and Soul Sliver.

It has to be the first gen for me. My childhood right there! Although Fire Read and Leaf Green are really great remakes, nothing beats the original :D I never really got into the 2nd gen (Gold etc..) but loved the 3rd gen (Ruby etc...) the newest games (Platinum etc..) Are well worth a play also. I have Jap copies of Heart gold and Soul silver (the newest Gold and silver remakes for the DS) And they are definitely something to look forward to. :D I can't fully enjoy them because they're in Japansese :P

Can't see past the first if I'm being honest, it's really just that brilliant tight knit 151 pokemanz - I found it supremely balanced.

2nd Gen for me. The endless toil of getting my Meganium to level 85.
    Then
the HUGE surprise of going to Kanto!
    OMGZ!

The Second Gen was certainly my favourite, although I stopped playing after that.

like craguls i got silver imported. it was just so epic and new and i didn't know anything about it before i got it. red will always hold a special place with me, as will the original level 100 team i had.

My brother and I also got our Gold & Silver copies from the States. Definitely my favourite generation, everyone seemed to be playing it! Silver was also the first proper Pokemon game I ever played (dabbled a bit in yellow but never had my own copy) so I suppose it kick-started a new love for me. I enjoyed Platinum aswell but I haven't played the latest versions yet.

    Who said Diamond/Pearl?

    Really?
The worst starter pokemon ever. Chimchar ffs.

I said 4th gen, if that's okay with yourself ;) Chimchar looks awesome once he evolves. I liked 4th Gen, it felt slightly more open ended, it added some nice features, and it was beautiful looking, crisp colours etc. And hey, online trading that works and such. Loved it <3

Second generation was just fantastic. They perfected everything from the first generation, and there were so many additions that I miss greatly when I go back to the first generation - quick item using select, exp bar in battle, Pokéball to show if you've caught a Pokémon, new Pokéballs to name a few. But the real-time clock was absolutely amazing. Only being able to visit the Safari zone on Tuesdays and Thursdays, catching different Pokémon depending on the time was just the best thing in any Pokémon game. Making it so difficult to change the time makes it superior to the DS games in that regard. Just brilliant.

I believe 4th gen games can tell if the time has been changed and stop all "day" or "time" bonuses until the next in game day.

Gold/Silver was definitely the best for me. As one poster said, it had all the little niggly bits fixed, it had day and night (), it had colour... When I was playing it Pokemon was still all the rage (unlike for the later generations). There were more pokemon, but there weren't crazy amounts like there are now. The series IIRC was on TV at the time too. The MASSIVE surprise of getting to go to Kanto just when you thought the game was over... unforgettable.

I wish I could go back to the day I started playing this game :( *sob*. I still have it, but it's just not the same.

2nd gen was just awesome. ever iteration since has been evolution, unlike gold and silver, they were revolution :pac:

2nd Generation was the best because the extra 100 pokemon were easy to remember and get used to. nowadays every year it seems another 100 are added. also it was TWO games in 1 and the added pokemon were good now they are just getting lazy example: Lickilicky, nosepassicon13.gif
    haha

Yup, they need to stop making new ones, and make some of the pokémon between num250-490(?) extinct. A meteorite could hit the Hoenn region or something.

It's a really close call between first or second ... But I think first, if I had to choose, although gold and silver really were fantastic too :) I miss pokemon so much, I really don't like all these new crappy ones that they made - even bringing it to 250 was shocking at the time, but how many are there now- 400? 500? It's crazy, and they have all new characters in the shows, and those pokemon contests in the newer games sucked mankeyballs!

I think yellow was my favourite when I was a kid cause you got pikachu, charmander, bulbasaur and squirtle- such an unstoppable team :D

    493 :)

THAT'S RIDICULOUS!!! They must be terrible! There's no way they can come up with 493 Good pokemon, but they did finally make a grass evolution of eevee, right? She was soo cool, I remember playing in the casinos for ages to get enough tickets to buy one ... At least I think it was for an eevee, I know you could get porygon but he sucked...
