I am wondering if anyone can recommend a decent starter course in make-up artistry... I was looking at portobello institute, LA make up and make up forever. Any professionals out there who can lend some advice? thanks :)

    Heya
I just started at LA makeup about 3 weeks ago and I absolutley love it.
Im doing module three which is for people who really wanna work as professional makeup artists.
They do a module 1 and 2 aswell
Module one is a kinda starter module to teach you the basics of doing your own makeup and give you all the industry tips
Module 2 is for people who wanna learn about bridal and fashion etc
I was going to go to Portobello but it doesnt compare to LA makeup at all.
The tutors are all working makeup artists so you can pick their brains on all the makeup secrets and must have products
Also they are some of the nicest people I have ever met
    I hope that helps

Hey Veganfriendly did you start a course yet? How is it going, Im looking to do one myself. I heard Portobello was actualy good and LA although most people said if your going to do one do a proper one thats run professionaly & gives you the accredation that you need for makeup, CIDESCO I think it is.. like the one in Dunlaorighe college - Heard terrible reports about that makeupfablicious place tho, not good at all, real run down place !! So If you started one love to know how its going before i fork out for one if Im paying the sort of money their asking have to be quaility! :-)

I'm currently doing Module 3 in La Make up and I love it, Find the tutors great, Its pricey but I think its worth it,

I disagree. I am a past Module 3 student of LA make up, now working for MAC and they accepted my LA Certification.

I loved my course, they have a one year open door policy so you have up to a year to resit in on classes & photoshoots. Which has been great because I have been able to go back and resit photoshoots to build up my portfolio which has probably saved me triple the cost of the course!

The tutors & office was very professional and always to hand if I needed anything. They 'chop' different tutors for the classes so that you get the most from it. I met amazing tutors at LA that all had different techniques but I felt I got most out of the course because I was shown so many ways and have brought my developed my own technique from this. I still keep in touch with the Tutors for any shoots I have coming up.

I would strongly advise anyone with a passion or interest in make-up to study at LA make up.

    Hope this helps Veganfriendly!

Was just thinking about this myself, will have a look into this one! Do many people do it just for themselves or to be pro's? How much is the one year specialist course?

Yes they do everything from an a one-on-one lesson to a 1 week beginners course. The 1 year course looks amazing! I would love to do it myself! There is a good bit of hair included in it also.

I checked out a similar 1 year course in London and that was £16k. Quite high but there is one year hairdressing courses in Ireland for €12k.

I see spending in education more as an investment than a cost, if you have a passion for it it will be worth every penny & you will make it back.

Some posts and quotes have had to be removed from this topic due to their libelous nature. The claims have been found to be untrue.

    Thanks.

I just want to offer a bit of advice regarding one year hairdressing courses. Having worked in both a salon as an apprentice and I am currently in a course that does beauty and hair, if you really want to choose hairdressing as a course I would recommend an apprenticeship.

I feel you gain better experience through a salon. The one year courses are good, but most salons will want to train you yourself, at the most you will go into a salon as a 3rd year trainee.

Hi, unrelated to the topic, but I was wondering if any make-up artists needed something for their portfolios, I'll be shooting a model in the next few weeks and would be handy to have a make-up artist for it..

What type of look are you after?

Its a head and shoulders shot and theme is seventies glam rock, so exaggerated david bowie/ziggy sardust make-up. Not sure if that explanation helps!
