Problem with VW Golf?

Just bought a VW Golf. Its drives perfectly for short distance journeys, around town etc. However after a long stint say on a motorway it cuts out when I go to slow down or change down gears. After it cuts out it will always start and change up through the gears perfectly however it cuts out again as soon as I go to slow down or change down gears.

After a break of say an hour it will be good to go again and will drive away. Anybody have any ideas what the problem could be? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You will need to get the car hooked up to a diagnostic computer either at a VW dealership or a VW specialist. Your car's ECU will have a fault code which the dealer or specialist can point them to the problem.

VWs are known for having problems with various oxygen sensors such as the Lambda, Mass Air Flow (MAF) or throttle body.

+1 on the mass sensor issue, although it caused ours to rev on idle.
OPS problems sounds more like one we had with the engine management unit.

    FWIW

    ONQ.

I forgot to mention its a 00' Golf. Can older cars still be hooked up to diagnostic computers?

Preferably though I would like to avoid dealers or specialists, Im on a fairly tight budget.

Just bought a VW Golf. ...!

If this was from a dealer you should just bring it back. I assume this isn't the case though?

No unfortunately not. I got the car on the cheap from a friend, I knew problems existed.

The car had been lying idle for the best part of three months before I bought it. I have been driving the car all over Christmas though, and the only time the problem occurs is after a long stint driving, say 2 hours plus.

In that case everything all the above said. I would not go to a dealer but a independent who has a diagnostic computer and knows something about VW's. Never had a good experience with VW dealers.

Well its really a trade off to be honest, either spend money on a diagnostic that will point to the problem or spend money on replacing parts that may or may not need replacing.

As you said you bought the car cheap knowing that there were problems that needed fixing.

it sounds like the same problem i had with my 01 leon its same platform as your golf it was a relay that went in mine easy to change its called relay 109 the older one was a white colour new ones are black and have a stronger current rating caused alot of problems in early golfs and leon, there is a fuse panel under the steering wheel you need to remove the lower plastics and you should see it i assume its same location on golf

had similar problem few months ago, was caused by sticking EGR valve. 10 min job to fix but fried my front oxi sensor and they're not cheap!

Is your car idleing at low RPM below say 850? If so id change your air filter E10 at a motor factors this should fix your problem. Simple 10 minute job.

    Is yours a TDI?

    http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=200146&highlight=slowing+down+stall+quit

That thread sounds like whats happening to you, except yours could be a bit more far on. But it could be as simple as air filters and air sensors.

I have read of the newer (2003+) TDI's with this problem because of dual mass flywheels and other complicated things but never a 00.

Your can can be hooked up to a diagnostics computer.
Ill keep searching the tdi forum to see what comes up

Thanks for replies. Same problem happened again today, was driving home on the motorway from Cork, no problems at all until I when to slow down for the off ramp. As soon as I did car started chugging and just cut out.

It started up again, however I had to constantly keep revs high otherwise it would just cut out. Everytime I when to stop then for the rest of the journey it cut out.

How much do you reckon a diagnostic would cost?

My sistor needed a diagnostic done on her Lupo about 18 months ago, the local VW dealer was charging €60 for a diagnostic, I'm sure it has gone up since then.

An independant specialist will probably charge less.
