So My DVD drive went kaput...

My current dvd drive (Sony DVD +-RW DW-Q58A) on my Dell Inspiron 6400 has lost the functionality of its CD laser. It can play DVDs, but can't play or read CDs. From scouring forums, it seems that this is a hardware issue and so I probably need to buy another one.

I saw this on pixmania http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/3492893/art/lg/gt20n-8x-super-multi-slim.html as a cheap replacement, and I'm just wondering:

    A) why is it so cheap compared to all other slim dvd drives
    B) is it compatible from a physical point of view?

    Thanks

    A) why is it so cheap compared to all other slim dvd drives?

Which other ones did you see that were more expensive? The drive you're looking at is an internal drive, is it possible that the more expensive ones were external/portable drives?

AFAIK the 6400 has an IDE DVD drive. That SATA one you linked to won't work.

This is a link from Hardwareversand.de for internal dvd re writers

The usual price seems to be between 50 and 80 euro for a drive that can fit in a laptop, I know the PC compatible ones are dirt cheap, but there ya go.
