searched it with no results - funny.

anywho - bike is Trek 5500. Headset is fubarred. CRC have a few FSA ones in the broad price bracket 0 -€40ish.

Have this horrible sensation after reading Kona's thread that I may have completely destroyed my frame, headset has been hanging off for a long time. Had it seen to originally when it fell loose (may have replaced, can't remember)

    Ta.

I have ye crappy old BBB one and this

I prefer the FSA one for obvious reasons.

Looking at pictures of 5500s on the internet they all seem to be traditional external headsets which can't destroy your frame, even theoretically. I think Trek only went integrated with the Madone, my 5000 was non-integrated. In this picture you see the cups either end of the headtube with "King" written on them- that is a traditional headset.

I'll let someone else more knowledgeable make a specific suggestion but it will be a traditional one with cups either end like this King one:

    I think you want a 1 1/8" one.

The one penexpers linked is designed for Downhill MTB racing AFAIK, might be a bit overkill on a road racer.

it certainly is the trad external headset

I've a brand new Cane Crrek headset if you're interested. I think it's an S2 (I'll check tomorrow). Same as http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=1827 except 11/8".

I fancied one of these:- http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=25965 but the bikes I have that take bearing cups are not worthy:o

I think the Trek would suit, either that or Chris King.

I saw that one but I don't think it is compatible, the Columbus system is different.

Just checked - it is a Cane Creek S2, silver, 1-1/8", brand new.

Uberwolf, you should be fine. I destroyed 4 different headsets on my 10 year old 5500. No damage to the frame, as previously mentioned its a traditional old school externally mounted one. Get yourself a nice Chris King and never worry about one again, failing that the BBB one is nasty but works and is as durable as the FSA one in my experience (mine is the older 1 inch steerer type so make sure you know your steerer diameter before you buy).

On the flipside you will have to look down and see BBB written on your bike, you could always color over it with permanent marker or something though.

I have a BBB external headset on my tourer and it has been absolutely fine, for what it's worth. Never thought of the black marker trick :)

Greyspoke's Cane Creek looks good though and would work I think presuming your steerer is 1 1/8.

after some consideration, I've decided the bike is the 2000 model. 1999 ran a 1" headset afaik, and I think mine was the first year on ahead, presumably at 1" 1/8.
    Does anyone know for certain?

Greyspoke - PM me a price on that headset, may as well keep it in the family rather than CRC

This may help, suggests ahead 1" 1/8 from 2000.

I am not sure if there are different headset standards though or if they are all the same if external and 1" 1/8- someone on the internet was saying his 2004 Trek used a proprietary headset and fork, something to do with the flare.
