    hello,

I've downloaded both Mint and Ubuntu.

I now have to burn the iso to a disc, but all I have are DVD-Rs, are they usable, or do I need CD-Rs?

    Thanks

Never knew that. I thought you'd need a cd.

    Welcome to linux Des. :)

You can also run it in a virtual machine - download Virtual Box from Sun or Microsoft's Virtual PC and you can install directly from the ISO without having to burn it.

It will of course be a little slower, but it will give you an idea of how it works.

    Don't forget USB!
Unetbootin is available for Windows and puts the iso on a USB drive if your PC can boot from it.

Thanks, but that requires a Windows OS that will boot.

It's my old laptop which I'm having trouble with :)

Good luck with the Linux Des. I second the suggestion if using Unetbootin. It's much quicker to load up from a USB.

If you need any help we'll do our best.

Not all vindoz users are so dumb after all. :p

Here's a little linux gem (one in a thousand) that you'll love from the word go. Your new cd/usb with ubuntu/mint on it will let you boot into linux desktop (no installation necessary) and recover all your files from windows system before you send it to oblivion. :pac::pac::pac:

I'm about a month ahead of you. Recently moved to Linux Mint.

I could not burn the ISO onto a CD, I had to use a DVD-R. Might have been the cheap CD's I had.

I have dual boot at the moment, as I want to keep the Windows option open for the time being.

Before you install, there is a good forum topic on on considerations before you install in the Linux Mint forums.

    Best luck

I have a couple of problems and some questions.

I created a second user account, with full admin access etc, but sometimes when I log into it it is completely unresponsive, in that I can't click anything. My own login account is working fine.

Second, I'd like to know how to install Spocast so I can watch footabll.

    Cheers.

Hi Des, you can download the installer for Sopcast from here:

    http://sopcast-player.googlecode.com/files/sp-auth_3.2.6_all.deb

Just double-click to install it, should work.

I don't know about your other problem, sounds strange.

The free software, DeepBurner allows you to burn bootable CD ISOs directly to bootable DVD. Worked for me.

    Download the free version.
