    Science.
What I like is it's interesting enough, easy enough.
What I don't like is that there was a pretty sudden step-up a few weeks in, caught me off-guard. Also the long gaps are a ****ing pain.

    2nd year Science.

I enjoy it but I've noticed a large step-up from 1st year. (Be ready amacachi).
As said the large gaps can be a pain but I like what I'm studying.

    What about you OP?

    Postgraduate Law (LL.M)

Like - the modules choices and the content and, of course, the nights out!
Dislike - exams after Christmas and not having results (of anything) til October

    Single Honour History (1st year)

Like: I very much like history, as such I love this course.
Dislikes: Not enough hours in the week, you can get bored fairly easy..unless you go and study or something :S

Second year science..there's a lot more in it..a lot more..what's really crazy for me anyway is that it's more modulated than last year and then within each module you have loads of different modules..it seems more confusing to me this year anyway but im liking the course information better this year because I got to pick them..plus zoo next semester!

Atmosphere is great I find. I'm in the Arts Block, and I bump into people I know everywhere, and I assume it's the same for non-arts blocky-types. I live at home and it's fine. I hear stories of shenanigans at halls, and want to move out, but I also hear that halls isn't great, and that it'd be better to rent a flat.

Loads of societies and nights out, so there are loads of ways to meet people.

I'm in first year French and History. I like it but then I go through periods of hating it but usually that's around essay times. History is a lot of work and reading so I'm kind of worried about exams and all that. It's very different from school.

I like that about the Arts Block! And yeah, halls isn't all it's cracked up to be at times...

It's still easy enough, trouble for me is I switched a subject a third of the way into the term and missed a few days around that time, just seemed like we did nothing at all for the first few weeks than it started. I'll be well ready for next year provided God provides me with money for fees in the next two weeks. :pac:
What subjects do you do amacachi?

Maths, Biology and Geography. Maths seems hard in lectures (the ones I go to) but I find the questions in the tutorials to be a piece of piss. Biology and Geography are hard to gauge but I haven't come across anything yet that scared me.

1st year TP. It's interesting but it can be really hard at times. I really like it though. Timetable isn't that great however and some lectures are just really crap. One lecturer is terrible and the physics is a bit boring.

    Postgrad, MSc in Environmental Science.
Likes: No exams, some interesting stuff covered in modules, incredibly nice people on course and we all tend to get on.
Dislikes: No exams, continuous assessment, disjointed and poorly organised modules. Really, I'm kind of sick of the course already but I'm going to stick it out and see what happens. I'm glad to be doing it but I'll be happy to finish it.

    JF TSM French and Spanish.

I love working with the languages, particularly Spanish in terms of the Spanish department. I've been finding them easy to work with, since I started TSM ( I transferred from a similar language course just before reading week). Don't get me wrong I like French, but I haven't had much support with the grammar side. And after christmas our grammar lectures are likely to be given in French, which won't really help the situation. I don't believe you can learn another language's grammar, through that language, although maybe it won't be so bad. Spanish don't have any tutorials for literature, so you're left to your own devices. Also French and Spanish assignments always clash. I've 2 christmas essays to do due on the same day, but I've had a bit of time to get them both done (even with christmas and snow:)). So I can't really complain.

I've dropped out of two courses now, that's why i'm asking the question. My boyfriends in trinity so I've been there a lot, know my way around and really like it so i'd love to find a course there...it's good to hear students opinions on the course and not the biased prospectus, you know? :D

    Maths

    Likes: Its almost over
Dislikes: its terrible. Really hard, not interesting, absolutely useless and non-applicable, lecturers are boring etc etc

  • Registered Users Posts: 215 ✭✭dermo1990

    1st Year Engineering
Its really interesting with some pretty good projects/modules, but some of the modules are kinda confusing/poorly organised. Given that some new modules have been added this year it is to be expected. But still for one of the others there has been a really high fail rate, so there is rumour that they will be adding more tutorial time this semester to rectify the problem

    :(

    As an alternate viewpoint:

Likes: Enough choice that every course I'm doing is interesting, some are fascinating, completely useful and applicable to a variety of things (for example, um, a career in theoretical physics academia), and also the fact it's better than the TP degree for doing theoretical physics in.
Dislikes: Certain aspects of certain courses I've done but nothing major...

    JF CS:

Pros: Variety, computing labs, some very interesting lectures, some lecturers, the feeling when you "get" a concept.
Cons: Some lecturers, the pace is far too slow in some classes and too fast in others, people talking during maths, not a fan of continuous assessment.

    JF History

Likes: I really like the course, most of the modules are interesting apart from one.
Dislikes: As someone has already said, the aren't many hours in the course which makes it less likely for me to stay in to study.

  • Registered Users Posts: 219 ✭✭rjt

    Another maths.

Likes: The hours are nice. It sharpens your analytical skills. There's lots of choice (even if a lot of the options aren't great). You can branch out into different areas - you can do almost any 3rd or 4th year CS course, a few economics courses, lots of stats. It's challenging in a good way - a lot of the time you have to struggle with things, but it's satisfying when it all works out.

Dislikes: You really have to want to do pure maths. I mean _really_. I thought I did and have nearly transferred to something else 3 or 4 times at this stage. As was said above, if you want to do something non-academic afterwards, you can forget most (practically all) of what you've learned. It's challenging in a bad way - sometimes you need to learn things by rote, some courses are basically incomprehensible. If you like maths, there's a good chance you won't by the end.

    JS SH Economics

Likes; Very light workload if you want it to be. Reasonably interesting material, and wide course choices ranging from investment analysis to Economic Policy types. Reusing schols essays a LOT to save on effort. (It's called efficiency people.)

Dislikes; Lots of project type things, and many people don't work well(or at all) in groups. Econometric labs. The fact that the degree should really be divided into quantative and qualatitive areas, so that people don't end up Jack of All trades and master of none. Stata. Mid term exams. A lot of the material is deathly boring.Economics.:p

    Another for JF Science

Likes; The variety in the course, labs are interesting, lecture material is often interesting, lots of degree choices for specialisation.

    Dislikes;
Long gaps between lectures, two years general science (often have to study stuff you don't like) speciality is handed out based on academic merit so you could always get stuck with something you don't want if there's a high demand.

    3rd Year Maths

Likes: Most courses are interesting and pretty progressive compared to some other universities. Not much continuous assesment, emphasis on final exams. Workload is as light/heavy as you wish to make it as long as you get through end of year exams. Pete.

Dislikes: Some lecturers extremely boring, maths dept. not good at organising themselves or anything else. Not much choice for subjects in 1st/2nd year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,916 ✭✭✭ronivek

    SS Computer Science;

Likes: Mostly very interesting as a subject, some interesting lecturers and they're generally pretty nice.

Dislikes: The department is very poorly managed and administered, there's a lack of cohesion between subjects offered from one semester to the next(although the newer JF/SF students won't be suffering quite so much with this), not enough emphasis on continuous assessment, huge disparities between subject difficulties and assignment durations, lectures tend to be a little bit too out of date and irrelevant, whilst supposedly a course for preparing you for research a number of fundamental topics aren't covered at all or they're not covered in enough depth.

Maybe I'm just bitter because I'm staring down the barrel of a ****load of work and not even close to enough time to do it in.

    1st radiation therapy

like: we seem to have it easier that general science folk, interesting enough course, small class so very sociable etc.

dislike: alot of staff on campus seem to forget our course exist :( (spent an entire day being pushed from one department to another just so i could hand in some stupid form!), we spend alot of time in st.James unnecessarily... the course seems very slack, we are encouraged to make educated guesses with in practical work with no real substance to most of our lectures (imo :o)
