I had a crack off a Marlin a while back accurate gun but AFAIK they can give feed problems, something to do with the Mag. I can't remember exactly what the fix is but it is a known problem.
CZ hard to beat for the money, the minimauser action is well proven.

Have you thought about a Savage?

Had a 17 CZ and it was a class gun, very accurate and reliable and don't cost a army and a leg.

I'm just reading up about it now, do you use one yourself? If so how do you find it?

I can vouch for the Savages. Can definitely see one in my future in .17 HMR. Great round and a great gun. shot one before and was putting everything through the same hole at a hundred yards. stupidly accurate.

    My Mate has a Weihrauch HW60J .17HMR
Brilliant rifle , I've shot it a lot over the last year, crisp light trigger, beautiful rifle, accuracy is unbelievable . He has a Schmit and bender on it great combo.

Any fox we shot dropped on the spot.

i'll see if i can dig up a pic.

Cheers, what type of price would ammo be in general terms I know it varies shop to shop? Is it more expensive than .22

I think it's about €13-17 for 50 as a rule, wouldn't swear to it though. I'd say get a nice rifle, a CZ or a Savage, stick a good scope on it and don't look back, personally. And good glass is worth the extra cash.

I had feed problems with my Marlin .17. Fixed it a couple of years ago by glueing a piece of plastic from a rawl plug onto the front of the red strip at the bottom of the mag. This pushes the bullet end of the cartridge up on feeding. Has fed perfectly ever since.

i have a weihrauch hw60j in .22 hornet and i love it, its a lot nicer than my cz in .22, nicer stock, trigger and quieter safety the only downside to it is its a bit heavier, if the .17hmr are anyway like the hornet i can guarantee it'd be a cracking rifle, saying that though, with the exception of the trigger the cz's are a great rifle and that can be easily sorted with a yodave trigger kit for 10quid on ebay, i've no first hand experience with the .17 calibre but thats my opinion on these rifles

They're heavy and crunchy. They're a standard thing everyone swaps out as soon as possible. That said, if that's all that's wrong with the gun, and it can be solved for just a few quid, it's still a bargain as far as I'm concerned.

its just very stiff and when you squeeze it you can sometimes find yourself pulling the rifle down a bit and end up aiming low, saying that i was using it for a few years and i didn't realise how bad it was until i got my weihrauch, so i bought the kit and popped in a new spring and now it is grand and i found my accuracy improved a nice bit, its simple to do and you can even find videos on youtube to guide you through it

i have a cz 452 in .22 and its a great rifle much more accurate than a friends marlin. only thing is go with a varmit or an american as the have a higher stock and suit a scope better

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,754 ✭✭✭Odysseus

Cheers lads, plently to think about there. As I said just at the planning stage, I try a few shops and start getting my paperwork in order first.

ya i forgot to mention that, for a good cheek weld with a basic cz or with the weihrauch you'll need a comb raising kit like a beartooth kit

    i have the marlin 917vsf
deadly on greycrows out to 150 yards
capable of one hole groups at 100 yards[not in my hands though:(]
bought it in trapper johns about 2 years ago
    only one minor gripe
    trigger a little heavy.

I have a Savage in .17hmr. Small grouping and very accurate. Comes with ajustable acu-trigger and screw cut for a moderator.

Mine is not the best looking rifle (standard black plastic stock and blued barrell) but it does exactly whats needed of it. At the time it worked out cheaper than the CZ. Having said that there is also the thumbhole stock which is much nicer but much more expensive (over double the cost). Savage have some new rifles coming out with a kind bench rest type stock that look the business.

    Hi all,

As I continue my journey with hunting, I started with a .22 Gamo air rifle last year, then moved to a lanber o/u I thinking of going for a .17 hrm. I would be using it for rabbits and would like to try foxes as there are quite a few around here.

I was thinking of the Marlin 917
    http://www.marlinfirearms.com/firearms/17HMRMagnum/917.asp

    Or maybe the cz
    http://www.shoot.ie/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_25&products_id=156

Anybody any thoughts on either of the above or any other recommendations?

I'm only at the research stage, plan to visit afew shops over the next few weeks

CZ Any day, all day, and a 453 varmint at that, slan, 333.

I was looking at the cz american today, I quite liked the feel and weight of it. Not making a decision yet but it's on the list.

Edit: Thanks to everyone for their advice and suggestions so far.

I have the CZ452 and I think it's a lovely little gun. Like you I was going for the foxes so I decided to go for the slightly heavier calibre .22WMR. My plan was to mostly do lamping which would be mostly in breezy weather so I figured the heavier calibre would cope better in the wind. As it turns out I haven't done a lot of lamping with it mostly taking bunnies and the odd grey, it's a great piece of kit, I put a nice Burris scope on it and a bipod I'd easily hit a rabbit or grey out past 100yds.

I considered buying the trigger kit for it, but to be honest I haven't noticed anything in the trigger, but I wouldn't have shot many other rifles. There's a tensioner inside that you can use to adjust the trigger anyway so you can set it up whatever way you want.

I have the 917vs-cf model for about 3 yrs now great rifle has never given me any problem. Have put thousands of rounds through it, shot hundreds of rabbits quite a number of foxes to. Sub 1" groups at 100 yrds.

I have a 917vs marlin about 3 years now its unreal accurate on a calm day it would put 3 bullets in a 10mm square easily enough the original trigger was terrible though to be honest but i fitted a rifle basix trigger to it and it now breaks at a crisp 2lb's and is very nice.I used to own a light barreled cz american it was a nice rifle but i found the marlin to be more accurate.

I have had a CZ 452 American in .17HMR for a few years now. Fantastic rabbit gun. I shot this fox two days ago with a 17gr Federal V-Max at 50yards, right between the eyes. Legs just folded under her and she dropped like a stone.

Cheers lads, paper work is ready to go, just have to catch to local station when its open tomorrow. I went with the CZ American, so hopefully I'll get the application in tomorrow and have it in about three months.

I was looking at a second hand Ruger All Weather , it have a Tasco scope, large mod, bipod, etc; however I didn't like the weight and balence of it.

I just paid the deposit, they owner was out sick today, but if it comes through I will be looking for a mod, good sight and a few extras. When I spoke to him on Tuesday he said when it comes through and I pick the mod and other stuff that he will sort me out. The price for the CZ was 570e. He has done me deals before and the two times I have purhased he has do that and added stuff like a cleaning kit, saying that's on him.
