Is joining the AA or RAC a good idea?

Following on from another thread, it got me thinking. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055794582

Is joining the AA or RAC a good idea?

I’ve been a member of the AA for about 25 years, and in that time I think I’ve called them out three times.
1st time…locked the keys inside the car while on holiday in Clare, guy arrived within an hour even though a Sunday afternoon.
2nd time….smoke coming from dash, turned out to be nothing:o.
3rd time…faulty alarm, car would not start.

Any other time I’ve had a problem, I’ve sorted it out myself:cool:.

The main reason I stay with them is because I have a car and two motorbikes (the AA also do motorcycle recovery).

Now, I do all my own servicing so I’m not totally lost when it comes to motors, but I’m far from being an expert.

check what's covered by your insurer and if your car is relatively new what the manufacturers roadside assistance package offers.

I have a comp policy with Quinn Direct and that has roadside assistance included.

Home Start is a rip off IMO, I'd just roll it down the driveway off my property and call them out. ridiculous that you have to pay €50 a year more for it on AA

And trying to cancel/get refund is stupid with AA. Called them up today as was charged double what i paid last year, they said to email it to them?!

AA price structure is all over the place, existing members get screwed while new customers get cut throat rates. Having said that I have been a member of both, and have used both, and the AA was better IMO.
