Windows 7 Media Centre - DTT channel names

I had a (ahem) slightly illegal-ish copy of Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bit) running for a while, and back then (apart from some fada problems in the TG4 listings, which seemed to resolve themselves) the channel names in the Irish EPG looked fine.

I've now installed a fully legal copy of Ultimate 64-bit and I notice that the channel names have changed. It's possibly a complete coincidence, but RTE ONE has now become RT1, RTE Radio 1 has become RT Radio 1 etc. (see image below). If I look in the DTT stream itself, the channel names are correct, but I assume these are being set by whoever provides the EPG, rather than being extracted from the stream. So who to complain to? And before anyone mentions it, yes, I'm aware that I can change the names myself, but I shouldn't have to.

Just a simple cheapo Freecom USB stick. Had all kinds of troubles getting it to work in XP with various s/w, but it worked straight away with Media Centre in Windows 7. Very impressed!

BUMP: Has nobody else noticed this, or is it only me?

i assume they are taken from the stream so its an issue for RTENL, same as the EPG data.
    afaicr, i just renamed mine

But they're not ... the names in the stream are correct (I've peeked at them using Transedit MMC). Also, from what research I've done, I'm pretty sure the EPG data that Windows 7 MC uses comes from a third party too, and is also not taken from the stream itself.

i dont know then, but someone here got changes made to the EPG by contacting RTENL.
i use a manual scan for channels on a UK setup so wasnt sure how else it would have got data other than via the stream

Oddly enough, my LG M227WDP TV/monitor displays "RT 1" instead of "RTE 1" - just like yours, "RTE Two" appears OK. This is in Cork city if location is relevant.

Here's what's coming in here in Bray (from 3 Rock) in the stream itself, which doesn't correspond to what's appearing in the Media Center EPG as shown in my original post. It also echoes what I see if I use DVBViewer to read the EPG from the stream.

Could there also be a channel name encoded in the MHEG5 stream for the EPG, that is being used instead for channel name display, both by Windows 7 MC and your television?

just to note, your screenshot shows all the letters with a fada missing
check RTE two (it doesnt have a fada in your dvb viewer screenshot)

perhaps its how 7MC handles fadas

    /edit
thats exactly what you and turly are both seeing

I thought that too, but there's also the RTE 2 versus RTE TWO thing going on as well, which that wouldn't account for. (Same for TV3 vs TV Three, and there's a space between TG and 4 in one and not the other).

i just did a manual rescan and the channel names were identified correctly in the scan window in 7mc.
i havent deleted any channels from my guide so dont know how they would translate across.

are you using the inband epg? i presume you have your media centre set to ireland, is there are option for dtt in the setup or are you mapping the analog channels?

I have it set for Ireland, yes, and it appears to know it's DTT. As for which EPG it's using, I don't know, is there a setting anywhere? I haven't seen one.

I've just done a complete manual rescan as well, and no change.

Anyway, this is all very odd. I've got a contact within Microsoft Ireland who works on this stuff, and I've emailed him to see what he says.

just to confirm, all channels detected correctly in add more channels, but lose the E when heading into the guide.
    had to rename using guidetool.

If you go into the guide and highlight the channel name and hit the "i" button on the remote or right the channel name a new menu appears. Click edit channel

This menu will allow you to edit channel - in here you should be able to rename it to RTE. Give it a try.

Yes, I know that, I even mentioned it in my original post. The point is I shouldn't have to, and that somewhere there would appear to be some incorrect information being downloaded / transmitted and I was wondering how to let whoever was responsible know and get them to fix it.

There have been a few threads on this fada thing in Media Center before.
I've discovered a few things while observing this phenomenon apparently fix itself and then come back again, sometimes within the space of a day.

One thing I know is that it's not a problem that only occurs in media center. I see it on my LG LF7700 TV as well. So it must be channel information coming from RTENL.

I receive RTE DTT from Mt Leinster.
A while back they started broadcasting the same MUX on four difference frequencies from Mt Leinster. I tuned in them all on the LG TV and I noticed that the MUX on some frequencies had the channel names correct with the fada and others did not. So I think it must be that some muxes on some of the frequencies are sending the correct channel info/text encoding or setting or whatever it is, and some aren't. (Sorry that I don't have a list of which are good and which are not to hand right now).

My next experiment in media center was to tune in the channels on each mux/frequency and see if I could confirm that the same ones were displayed correctly and incorrectly as on the LG TV.

At the moment I'm using the mux on channel 39 for the RTE channels in media center and the channel name info and fadas are ok.

It could be though that someone is regularly changing the settings (whatever the settings are that cause this) on some or any of the muxes as part of their "tests".
