Fuel Allowance --> JSA/Ilness benefit

    Hi all,
    I was claiming JSA until the middle of December '09 and then due to ilness my doctor put me on certs. I was then awarded E196.00 per week which is the same amount I am entitled to on JSA. While on JSA I was also getting E20.00 per week fuel allowance, but have now been told that I am not entitled to this on Illness Benefit.
    I cannot understand the logic of this as my circumstances are still the same and I certainly did'nt get any warmer since I became ill. Maybe someone here can explain the logice behind this decision, because it certainly has me baffled !

    Thanks in advance .............

    Pat

    Like Jobseekers Benefit, Illness benefit would be considered by the DSFA to be a short term payment for disruption in work due to illness although if you read some of the posts here there does seem to be some claimants who have been claiming IB for years.

    Allowance on the otherhand is a long-term payment and persons in receipt of payments are considered to have different financial needs leading to secondary entitlements.

    Unlike Disability Allowance of Invalidity Pension, if you are claiming IB you are not entitled to a travel pass, fuel allowance etc.

    I dont know if you are in receipt of a full or doctor only medical card. If not you should put in a claim for this and this will be means tested.

    Also, if the cold is affecting your health you may consider contacting st. vincent de paul who may be able to help you by contributing in some way to the cost of fuel.
