My car squeals like a pig

with the recent cold snap my car has begun to squeal like a pig when I start it up, and then disappears after a while(couple of minutes maybe).

This happens every cold snap now and I keep meaning to do something about it so here I am now... it is actually getting a little embarrassing to drive when it makes this sound.

Anyway, to all the mechanics out there, what can I do to fix this. Thanks.

adjust your fan belt - no biggie

More than likely an auxiliary belt (powering alternator, power steering etc) is slipping. Could also be a waterpump being driven from this belt, depending on engine.
There is no fan belt on modern cars - they have electric motors instead.
Does it only happen when you have a heavy electrical load - rear window demister, fan on full? Or is it there without anything on except the engine?
Does it happen every time you pull away from a stop within the first few minutes of driving?

If it only happens under heavy electrical load then it's not likely to be a costly problem. If it happens without heavy load and the water pump is being driven from this belt I'd get it checked out ASAP.

There is also a small chance that there are some oil flow problems for a few seconds when engine starts, you'll get an awful squeal from the camshafts if this is the case.

Ya, I was a bit pedantic there alright.:o
But the OP might as well know that when people say fan belt these days they don't actually mean a belt connected to the fan.
