It is a 1980, but fully rebuilt in 2004. New galv chassis and bulkhead.. lots of new stuff in fact!

Originally it was a van, and the bonnet is ex-mod 110 (for the wheel holder).

This pic was taken last summer.. or was it summer 2008... not sure.

Here a pic of my 2 door classic from the E-Bay ad I bought it from a few years ago (2005) .Doesn't look as clean now but still not bad.

Plans are to replace the carb'd V8 with an injected V8 running a Megasquirt ECU and ditching the distributor. Need to clean up the lower tailgate a bit too.

Mmmmmmmm, stage 1's and a 2door,and I bet ye are all unexplicably attached to them often thought I;d like a really really nice one,or to sort Eeore cosmetically, but then half his charachter would be gone and you'ld be afraid to use it etc. etc..only today I dropped him into a serious ditch avoid a Pr!@k in a focus sideways in the snow, two tractors later the only damage was a few scratches a passenger door handle and a bumper end cap. as it stands he's mechanically sound 98% rust free and presentable enough as I said I'm pretty attached but then I have a bit of a landrover problem.

Got me interested - what are they like for reliability / cost of ownership?

The V8s are probably the heaviest vehicle on fuel you'll ever own!!! And the rot from the inside out. The engine sounds great though and they're very good off road.

ah come on, they're not too bad. :-)
Had several Range Rover Classics and I do have a soft spot for them. The 3.9 Efi is quite a reliable machine. But they do need regular servicing and fettling. But most classics would anyway! If you can find a late manual, fuel consumption isn't too bad, considering the engine, you can average between 19-22 mpg, the auto boxes usually tempt you too much to floor the throttle on pickup.
I would tend to avoid the airsuspension models (especially the LSE, since that has a poor 4.2 engine), although they have a much, much better ride, but they're too complex and at this age stuff starts to go wrong, which can be expensive to fix. And yes, DO check the chassis thorougly, but the panels and doors are all aluminium so the cars tend to always look quite presentable. Upper Tail gates usually have a life span of about half a year, and early bottom ones are steel, and can rot out too. Apart from that, they're 'relatively' trouble free.
I would advise to take a test drive in them, as not everyone likes the high up, slightly roly-poly ride in fast cornering.

1980, just like my series 3 petrol..... Which now has to be NCT'd This should be fun. I emailed the NCT to make sure they could handle an Ex-MOD vehicle with it's switch gear etc...... should make for an interesting reply.

I had a RRC for two years, V8 replaced by 200TDI, loved it to bits.......I do mean bits as already said, she rotted from the inside out.

Mine rotted from the rear floor and wheel arches, front inner wings, rear chassis and fuel tank.

But other than that she looked great.
I should have kept that engine, 200Tdi was brill, ran on PVO from tesco, smelt like a chipper.

Fuel consumption 200/300 TDI near as damit 30MPG or if tou prefer as economical as "real" jeeps get efi v8 can do 20MPG carbed ones can do 10 MPG parts from the likes of Paddocks are dirt cheap rust, rust and more rust are the killers, oddly enough the older ones are much better in this regard less BL influence I guess, the earlier 4 doors up to mabey '83 the inner body shells are bolted togeather so much easier to repair.Mechanically they are dead simple and fundamently very reliable I'd avoid anything more complex than electric windows/mirrors and power steering (standard fit)............or you could be a masochist and get a Defender,I'm joking just earplugs, yes I like Defenders Just as much but they are a tool full stop.
P.S you can forget about you metric tool sets, and a 3/4" socket set would be useful once in a while.

There will be the odd Whitworth bolt or two in there as well!

You want to try 9mpg towing in a 101, average 12mpg
Just a sheet of ally between you and the V8 though - magic :D
