I just completed a christmas contract and have been laid off.
I was paying emergency tax and was wondering what i need to claim that back, and approx how long will it take. I already have my p45 and i filled out the p50, anything else i need?

Hi, thats essentially all you need to do in order to claim back your emergency tax. It may take a while (3-4 weeks) as it is the time of year when everybody sends in their claims for the previous year.

Repayments are usually given priorty over other claims though!

    Hope this helps:)

You mention its a christmas contract so i assume you were working in December and paying emergency tax. If this is the case you will also need your p60 for 2009 or your final payslip (I would sent in your last 2 payslips as this year is a week 53 year) for the year 2009 as the P50 form will only work claiming back tax for the current year 2010.

I handed in my p45 when i started my new job on 31st march 2010, but i received my 1st pay and i have been taxed to hell, what can i do? how long will it take for this to be sorted out as it was alot of money they have took considering am only supposed to pay around about between £20-£30 pound a month as am only part time,

If you handed your P45 to your employer then you should not be taxed heavily. Ring Revenue and see did they receive the P45 from your current employer as that will contain their employers reg number and further relevant details that will enable them to set you up under your new employer.

You will be advised by Revenue from there.
