Engineering in Ireland

Hi Everyone,

I am a Leaving Cert student and spend most of my time over in the Leaving Cert Forum. I wandered over here however, because I am interested in a career in engineering and hoping for as much info and opinions about the different disciplines of engineering out there and the courses on offer in Irish IT's and Uni's. I think it is very important to make an informed decision about third level.

There is a thread in the Careers and Jobs Discussion section of the Leaving Cert forum and I am hoping that some of you could contribute to it. I and many of the other Leaving Cert students and prospective engineers would really appreciate it!

When I did my leaving, many moons ago, I wanted to do engineering...... just wasn't sure which type. I did lots of research, and asked lots of questions, and came to the conclusion the Mechanical Engineering was the most flexible in terms of potential career paths.

I am now a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, and I think that my conclusions were correct...... I know people working in fileds of engineering from product design, to manufacturing, pharma, energy, power generation, oil and gas, medical devices..... and so on.

I have worked primarily in the construction industry, which has seen me working in several multi-disciplinary teams that include architects, structural engineers, and electrical engineers. I like to think that I have a better understanding of those other disciplines than they do of mine, or of each others.

I don't know how helpful this reply is to you, but good luck, and get as may opinions as you can before you make your choice.
