South Africa would be another option. Guaranteed sun as it's the height of summer, but also peak season in terms of cost.

Try egypt as well. You can fly direct from Dublin to Sharm.

I went to the DR in March a few years ago and it rained pretty much every day, all day somedays. Still had a great time though.

If you plan on flying through LHR or LGW then the world is your oyster tbh. Any of the Caribbean islands would be hot that time of year, although it is expensive as it is a very popular destination for the Brits, Germans, Americans and Canadians.

Was in Dominican Rep for New Year last year ie Dec 08- Jan 09. Weather was great. Went all inclusive so worked out cheap enough. Two weeks is nearly as cheap as one. Saying that not much to do except sunbathe. Did a couple of organised trips but apparently it is not that safe to head off on your own. However heard on news just today about the terrible earthquakes in Haiti (same Island). Dont know what impact that will have on travel. Prob none particularly in 11 months time?

What's the best way to get to the DR from Ireland, or is it a case of letting Expedia sort it out for you?

You might get a cheap charter flight via the UK, I know in the past Budget or Twohigs offered direct charter flights from Dublin - not sure who's offering now.
