Queen's or UCD for Mechanical Engineering?

    Hello people!

I'm hoping to start a degree in mechanical engineering next year, and am still undecided whether or not to make a CAO application  (I've already applied through UCAS)

Just wondering if people here think it would be better to study mech eng at Queen's or UCD? Also is there anywhere in the south that would be a better choice than UCD for engineering?

    Thanks.

If your planning on doing Mech in UCD you will have to do the omnibus course (which is a good thing imho) and pick Mech as your specialisation at the end of first year. Here's the full list of modules you will take over the four years https://sisweb.ucd.ie/usis/w_sm_web_inf_viewer_banner.show_major?p_term_code=200900&p_cao_code=DN074&p_major_code=NMS1

The class for Mech is quite large, around 100 currently in 2nd year.

I can't really comment on the quality of the course, anyway once you graduate its the quality of the engineer that counts more then anything.

Mech Eng in UL is pretty good. Solid course and the uni has excellent facilities. Id consider it over UCD, but thats only my opinion..

You could say this about DIT, UCD, CIT etc etc.

OP UCD and Queens are both highly regarded engineering colleges. A degree from either would be an excellent start to your career. I'd go with whichever lets you move out on the cheapest budget.

Dublin is expensive, no matter which college you go to. Cork and Limerick would be cheaper, depending whether you stay on campus or off it. But the you have to factor in travel costs etc so it could even itself out.

On of the reasons I like Limerick so much is the mandatory work placement. Lots of universities do it now, but Limerick has been doing it alot longer, so it has built up contacts with some really really great companies. The big ones i can think of off hand would be Boeing, Airbus, Lufthansa, Bombardier, and Analog Devices. I know that those are mostly Aeronautically based ones, but as a mech eng its all the same really! Also Composties Ireland is based in Limerick, so if your into composites its the place to be at the moment!!
