Fried CPU?Motherboard?

    Hey everyone,

I just built a new system a couple of days ago, here are the specs :

    Gigabyte p55 ud4
    Intel Core i5 2.66ghz
    Corsair tx750w
    OCZ gold pc12800 4gb kit (2x2gb) @ 1600Mhz
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus cpu cooler
    Cooler Master Storm Scout
    Sapphire Ati Radeon HD5770 VaporX

I chose these parts for this build with overclocking in mind (no major, crazy overclocks, but some nonetheless).
And thats what i did. I overclocked my cpu to 3.6Ghz(which from what ive read in forums is easily achieved with an i5) with the settings in the pics below. I enabled "Load Line Calibration" and i left the cpu vCore on auto. (it was at 1.18v).

    09012010(002).jpg

-That was fine, i booted up and got into windows. Next i started up CoreTemp to keep and eye on the temperatures, and i said i better run Prime95 to test stability. I set up a torture test, clicked ok and *pc dies*. No warning, No BSOD, nothing. Just a quick shut off as if the power was cut. I leave it for a few seconds and try reboot. I press the power switch. Fans turn on for about a second then shut off again and process repeats. It doesent even get into POST.

I tried booting with no GPU, no RAM but no luck either. Also took out the CMOS battery..
I checked the motherboard for signs of burns or bloated capacitors. Nothing. I was gonna take off the CPU today, but im a little low on Thermal Paste so i think im gonna wait till i get more at least. I also checked the PSU, i plugged it into my old system and it powered up with to problems so i guess the PSU is ok.

If anyone has any ideas what it may be, how can i fix it, how can i narrow down the faulty components if i have to replace, i would greatly appriciate it!!
Im so dissapointed and i feel so stupid for attempting it after just a DAY of having the pc running! :(

    THANKS!

Hmm,Auto Voltage will cause spikes in the vCore.I tested this myself when I was overclocking my old E2200.I had it all on auto (stock speed) and a Linpack test pushed the voltage to 1.52v at one time. It's possible that the voltage didn't fry the CPU but the motherboard. All P55 sockets have problems with high voltages.

You have an i5 so i'm sure Anti will be able to help you alot more than I can (He owns an i5)

Oh God, don't tell me the mobo was old stock and the CPU socket melted itself?! :(

Thought that BS was all over and done with... unless there's been a fresh batch of dodgy sockets!

Only thing I'd try now would be a full disassembly job, checking the CPU socket for damage before reassembling. Then remove the CMOS battery (and hit the switch/jumper if there's one, otherwise the CMOS might stay locked) and try again.

Apparently, both the Foxconn and Lotes both suffer the problem

But it did seem to be fairly isolated; at the worst part there were mild-OC and even some stock-clocked mobos popping then the issue went away. I was just glad the issue seemed to fade away into the night... just hope it isn't coming back for Round 2 :(

Thanks for the replies! Well i havent made much progress really.. Ive tried clearing CMOS with the jumper. When i have the jumper on, i get even less activity than before. Infact, none!I press the power switch...and...nothing (Without the jumper on, all the fans spin, inlcuding the cpu cooler fan and the power phase led's come on..but only briefly..2 seconds at max).

Yeah ive heard that Foxconn sockets had a bad reputation with high voltages..but i wasn't doing crazy overclocking so i wasn't expecting to reach over 1.5v!

So auto voltage might have fried my motherboard and possibly cpu :S *sigh* Ill have a close look at the socket & cpu when ill take it apart.

I think ill ask some of the guys in Computer Services in college to see maybe they can havea look at it or maybe even the local pc repairs shop before i order any new parts again..DAMN what an expensive mistake !

Talk about putting me off overclocking! :(

The chip will be fine,1.5v or more would be fine for a small amount of time

It would be highly abnormal for a moderate OC to kill a CPU or mobo unless something was very wrong with it to begin with :o

So there's a CLR_CMOS jumper on that mobo? You do know you have to replace it to its starting position (and reinsert battery) before you can fire the mobo up again?

Well thats what i though...it is quite unussual...
And yes, there is a CLR_CMOS jumper on there, only has 2 pins though, no others. I had to take the pin from the cd drive to try clear the cmos as the motherboard didnt come with one...
And Solitaire, i mustve read the instructions on how to do it wrong ..I thought you had to power on the pc WITH the pin on, save changes and then remove it... Well anyway i can confirm that that solution didnt do anything as ive tried it both ways : With the jumper and by removing the battery for about an hour. No success :(
But, thanks for the help people!

Usually the CLR_CMOS disables a final level of protection or discharges a back-up capacitor that continues to hold the CMOS even with the battery out. Depends on what the manual says... and how bad its Engrish is :o

Yeah i think you're right, they say i have to short the battery holder by inverting the + & - on the battery so maybe that gets past the final level of protection...HOPEFULLY!

I took the battery out last night and ill leave it like that till i get back home, guess ill try short it then and hope for the best!

Haha talking about Engrish... i was looking at their website and they had " Operation System Supported" x]
